- 1. What's new in this release
- ======================================================================
- See SWHATNEW.TXT for a list of feature enhancements and fixes included
- in the Ghost Multicast Server for Norton Ghost 5.1c
-
- ======================================================================
- 2. Installation notes
- ======================================================================
- The Ghost Multicast Server is available for either:
- a) Windows 95, 98 and Windows NT 4 (Ghostsrv.exe)
- b) DOS (DOSGHSRV.EXE)
-
- The following introduces the installation method for each platform.
-
- Installing the Ghost Multicast Server for Windows. (Ghostsrv.exe)
- -----------------------------------------------------------------
- The Windows Ghost Multicast Server consists of a single executable
- file named ghostsrv.exe and an associated help file.
-
- Example installation:
-
- On a Windows 9x or Windows NT 4 PC:
-
- 1. Windows 95: Refer to Section 3, "Winsock2 Update for Windows 95"
- prior to installing the Windows Ghost Multicast Server.
- Windows 98/Windows NT4: Proceed to step 2.
-
- 2. Check Windows TCP/IP has been correctly configured on the machine.
-
- 3. Insert disk one of the installation disks containing Norton Ghost
- and Ghost Multicast Servers into the diskette drive.
-
- 4. Copy the contents of the a:\Server directory from the installation
- disk onto the hard drive.
-
- For example, open a DOS command box and type:
-
- C:\> md nghost
- C:\> cd nghost
- C:\NGHOST> xcopy a:\*.* \s
-
- This will copy all files and subdirectories contained on the
- installation disk to the nghost directory on drive c:
-
- Alternatively, the server files can be copied by using a click and
- drag approach.
-
- 5. Remove the Ghost installation disk from the diskette drive.
-
- 4. The Windows Ghost Multicast Server files consist of the following:
-
- Server\Ghostsrv.exe The Ghost Multicast Server application
- Server\Ghostsrv.hlp The Ghost Multicast Server online help file.
- Server\Ghostsrv.cnt The Ghost Multicast Server online help contents file.
-
- 5. To start the Windows Ghost Multicast Server, double click the ghostsrv.exe
- file.
-
- Refer to the "Multicasting" chapter of the Norton Ghost User's Guide for
- further details.
-
- For details on the Norton Ghost Multicast client, refer to the corresponding
- readme.txt file included with the Norton Ghost client (Ghost.exe), and to
- the Norton Ghost User's Guide.
-
-
- Ghost Multicast Server for DOS. (DOSGHSRV.EXE)
- ----------------------------------------------
-
- The DOS Ghost Multicast Server (DOSGHSRV.EXE) is a DOS application that
- requires a DOS environment to operate in. To use DOSGHSRV.EXE, create a
- DOS bootable floppy disk and copy DOSGHSRV.EXE and any required DOS
- device drivers onto it. Boot the server computer from this disk
- and execute DOSGHSRV.EXE with the correct command line switches.
- Further information is included in the Norton Ghost User's Guide.
-
- An example installation follows:
-
- On a DOS or Windows 9x PC:
-
- 1. Insert disk one of the installation disks containing Norton Ghost
- and Ghost Multicast Servers into the diskette drive.
-
-
- 3. Remove the Ghost installation disk from the diskette drive.
-
- 4. Create a blank DOS boot disk.
- At a DOS command prompt in Windows 9x or DOS, insert a blank
- formatted floppy disk into drive a: and type:
-
- C:\ > sys c: a:
-
- This copies the DOS system files required to make the boot disk
- from drive c: to drive a:
-
- Note: A DOS boot disk can not be created within the Windows NT
- operating system.
-
- 5. Copy the dosghsrv.exe file from the hard drive onto the boot disk.
- C:\NGHOST> copy server\dosghsrv.exe a:\
-
- 6. Setup a Packet Driver interface for the PC's network interface card
- on the boot disk. Refer to the Norton Ghost User's Guide for details
- on how to setup a DOS packet driver for multicasting in the "setting
- up transfer methods"
-
- 6. Boot the PC using the boot disk.
-
- 7. Start dosghsrv.exe using the required command line parameters.
- For example:
-
- a:\ > dosghsrv c:\image.gho sessionx -n10
-
- Refer to the "Setting up transfer methods" chapter of the Norton
- Ghost User's Guide for additional details on setting up DOS multicast
- applications.
-
- Refer to the "Multicasting" chapter of the Norton Ghost User's Guide
- for further multicasting details.
-
- For details on the Norton Ghost Multicast client, refer to the
- corresponding readme.txt file included with the Norton Ghost client
- and to the Norton Ghost User's Guide.
-
- ======================================================================
- 3. Winsock2 Update for Windows 95
- ======================================================================
- The Windows Ghost Multicast Server, ghostsrv.exe, uses Winsock 2
- to provide the multicasting features in Windows95, Windows98,
- and Windows NT.
-
- Winsock 2 is included in the distribution of Windows NT4 and
- Windows 98. There are no additional installation steps required to
- install ghostsrv.exe on systems running Windows 98 and Windows NT4.
- However, to run the Ghost Multicast server, ghostsrv.exe on a
- Windows 95 machine, the following steps are required:
-
- 1. Acquire the Microsoft Windows 95 Winsock2 update by pointing
- your Web browser to:
-
- http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/contents/Updates/W95Sockets2/
-
- 2. Make sure you read the associated documentation and text files.
-
- 3. Run the update "ws2setup.exe" on the Windows 95 machine.
- The update copies several files into the Windows directories, and
- updates the networking stack to Winsock2 as detailed in the
- documentation.
-
- 4. Reboot the Windows 95 machine.
-
- Caution:
- If you are running Windows NT or Windows98, DO NOT install the
- Windows 95 Winsock 2 update ws2setup.exe. Winsock2 is built into
- Windows98 and Windows NT version 4 and is not available for earlier
- versions of Windows NT.
