  6. Norton Ghost Multicast Server 5.1c Release Notes

  8. This README.TXT file supplements the Norton Ghost Client readme.txt
  9. text file. This file covers the Ghost Multicast Server installation 
  10. and late-breaking news and includes references to other related 
  11. information files. The following topics are discussed:

  29. The Ghost Multicast Server is available for either:
  30.   a) Windows 95, 98 and Windows NT 4 (Ghostsrv.exe)
  31.   b) DOS (DOSGHSRV.EXE)
  32.  
  33. The following introduces the installation method for each platform.
  34.  
  35. Installing the Ghost Multicast Server for Windows. (Ghostsrv.exe)
  36. -----------------------------------------------------------------
  37. The Windows Ghost Multicast Server consists of a single executable
  38. file named ghostsrv.exe and an associated help file.
  39.  
  40. Example installation:
  41.  
  42. On a Windows 9x or Windows NT 4 PC:
  43.  
  44.  1. Windows 95: Refer to Section 3, "Winsock2 Update for Windows 95" 
  45.     prior to installing the Windows Ghost Multicast Server.
  46.     Windows 98/Windows NT4: Proceed to step 2.
  47.  
  48.  2. Check Windows TCP/IP has been correctly configured on the machine.
  49.  
  50.  3. Insert disk one of the installation disks containing Norton Ghost
  51.     and Ghost Multicast Servers into the diskette drive.
  52.  
  53.  4. Copy the contents of the a:\Server directory from the installation 
  54.     disk onto the hard drive.
  55.  
  56.     For example, open a DOS command box and type:
  57.  
  58.        C:\> md nghost
  59.        C:\> cd nghost  
  60.        C:\NGHOST> xcopy a:\*.* \s
  61.  
  62.     This will copy all files and subdirectories contained on the 
  63.     installation disk to the nghost directory on drive c:
  64.  
  65.     Alternatively, the server files can be copied by using a click and 
  66.     drag approach.
  67.  
  68.   5. Remove the Ghost installation disk from the diskette drive.
  69.   
  70.   4. The Windows Ghost Multicast Server files consist of the following:

  72.      Server\Ghostsrv.exe   The Ghost Multicast Server application
  73.      Server\Ghostsrv.hlp   The Ghost Multicast Server online help file.

  76.   5. To start the Windows Ghost Multicast Server, double click the ghostsrv.exe 
  77.      file.

  87. Ghost Multicast Server for DOS. (DOSGHSRV.EXE)
  88. ----------------------------------------------
  89.  
  90.   The DOS Ghost Multicast Server (DOSGHSRV.EXE) is a DOS application that
  91.   requires a DOS environment to operate in. To use DOSGHSRV.EXE, create a
  92.   DOS bootable floppy disk and copy DOSGHSRV.EXE and any required DOS 
  93.   device drivers onto it. Boot the server computer from this disk 
  94.   and execute DOSGHSRV.EXE with the correct command line switches.
  95.   Further information is included in the Norton Ghost User's Guide.

  97.   An example installation follows:
  98.  
  99.   On a DOS or Windows 9x PC:
  100.  
  101.   1. Insert disk one of the installation disks containing Norton Ghost
  102.      and Ghost Multicast Servers into the diskette drive.
  103.  
  104.   2. Copy the contents of the a:\Server directory from the installation 
  105.      disk onto the hard drive.
  106.  
  107.      For example, open a DOS command box and type:

  119.      At a DOS command prompt in Windows 9x or DOS, insert a blank 
  120.      formatted floppy disk into drive a: and type:

  122.      C:\ > sys c: a:  
  123.  
  124.     This copies the DOS system files required to make the boot disk
  125.     from drive c: to drive a:
  126.  
  127.     Note: A DOS boot disk can not be created within the Windows NT
  128.           operating system.
  129.  
  130.   5. Copy the dosghsrv.exe file from the hard drive onto the boot disk.
  131.      C:\NGHOST> copy server\dosghsrv.exe a:\
  132.  
  133.   6. Setup a Packet Driver interface for the PC's network interface card 
  134.      on the boot disk. Refer to the Norton Ghost User's Guide for details 
  135.      on how to setup a DOS packet driver for multicasting in the "setting
  136.      up transfer methods"
  137.  
  138.   6. Boot the PC using the boot disk.
  139.  
  140.   7. Start dosghsrv.exe using the required command line parameters.
  141.      For example:

  143.      a:\ > dosghsrv c:\image.gho sessionx -n10
  144.   
  145.    Refer to the "Setting up transfer methods" chapter of the Norton 
  146.    Ghost User's Guide for additional details on setting up DOS multicast
  147.    applications.

  157.   3. Winsock2 Update for Windows 95 
  158. ======================================================================
  159.   The Windows Ghost Multicast Server, ghostsrv.exe, uses Winsock 2 
  160.   to provide the multicasting features in Windows95, Windows98, 
  161.   and Windows NT.
  162.  
  163.   Winsock 2 is included in the distribution of Windows NT4 and 
  164.   Windows 98. There are no additional installation steps required to 
  165.   install ghostsrv.exe on systems running Windows 98 and Windows NT4.
  166.   However, to run the Ghost Multicast server, ghostsrv.exe on a 
  167.   Windows 95 machine, the following steps are required:
  168.  
  169.   1. Acquire the Microsoft Windows 95 Winsock2 update by pointing 
  170.   your Web browser to:
  171.  
  172.   http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/contents/Updates/W95Sockets2/
  173.  
  174.   2. Make sure you read the associated documentation and text files.
  175.  
  176.   3. Run the update "ws2setup.exe" on the Windows 95 machine.
  177.     The update copies several files into the Windows directories, and 
  178.     updates the networking stack to Winsock2 as detailed in the 
  179.     documentation.

  181.   4. Reboot the Windows 95 machine. 
  182.  
  183.   Caution: 
  184.   If you are running Windows NT or Windows98, DO NOT install the 
  185.   Windows 95 Winsock 2 update ws2setup.exe. Winsock2 is built into
  186.   Windows98 and Windows NT version 4 and is not available for earlier 
  187.   versions of Windows NT.
