- COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY
-
- If we can judge a weapon's
- popularity by the number of
- colorful monikers it aquires,
- then the Colt Single Action Army
- revolver must be the most
- popular ever. Known variously
- as "peacemaker," "thumb buster,"
- "plow handle," "equalizer,"
- "hogleg," and many others, the
- Frontier Colt garnered almost as
- many nicknames as proud owners.
-
-
- Samuel Colt took a proven
- design - that of his Army Model
- 1860 percussion revolver - added
- a topstrap for strength and
- rechambered it (from .44) to
- accept a .45 caliber metallic
- cartridge. The 7 1/2"
- barrelled gun was issued to U.S.
- Cavalry forces in 1873 and was
- not available to civilian buyers
- until the mid '70's. From that
- time on, it became the sidearm
- to reckon with on the western
- frontier. Its excellent balance
- accounted for the sorts of
- spins, flips and midair
- exchanges which were perhaps
- occasionally attempted in the
- "real" west, and which continue
- to be performed by filmic and TV
- shootists. Its natural pointing
- ability made it ideal for
- offhand and hip shooting, and
- its rate of fire surpassed that
- of any revolver of the day.
- (Though it had to be manually
- cocked for each shot, the
- trigger could be held down for
- "fanning" purposes, allowing the
- six chambers to be volleyed off
- in less than two seconds.) One
- drawback was its slow rate of
- reload when compared to such
- contemporaneous break--open
- designs as the Smith & Wesson
- Schofield and Russion revolvers.
-
-
- The durability of the design
- is attested to by the fact that
- the gun has been in factory
- production off and on for over
- 100 years; the basic single
- action design continues to be a
- popular choice for hunters,
- sportsmen and all those with a
- taste for living history. "God
- created men," quoth the frontier
- pundit, "and Colonel Colt made
- them equal."
