- LUGER P-08
-
- Perhaps the most
- recognizable pistol on the
- planet, the Luger P-08 combines
- a distinctive toggle operating
- system with an acute
- grip-to-frame angle that makes
- it a natural pointer. While the
- pistol itself gave self-loaders
- a firm grip on the military
- marketplaces of Europe and
- elsewhere, perhaps more
- important historically was its
- introduction of the 9mm
- Parabellum cartridge which today
- remains the most popular
- chambering in auto pistols.
-
- The genesis of the P-08 (so
- designated because it entered
- service with German forces in
- 1908) begins with another famous
- arms factory, Winchester
- Repeating Arms in Hartford, CT.
- It was here that gun designer
- Hugo Borchardt served an
- apprenticeship just before the
- turn of the century and returned
- to Germany with a design for a
- pistol that looks like a Luger
- as envisioned by H.R. Giger.
- While producing his "Borchardt"
- at the Berlin firm of Ludwig
- Loewe, one of Borchardt's
- assistant engineers was a fellow
- by the name of George Luger.
- Herr Luger took Borchardt's
- unwieldy design, cleaned it up
- to make it handier and cheaper
- to manufacture and took the
- design to Deutsche Waffen and
- Munitions Fabriken (DWM). The
- rest is history, both real and
- as imagined in Hollywood. While
- the P-08 was replaced in
- official service by the Walther
- P-38 in (you guessed it) 1938,
- no doubt many German officers
- retained their trusty Lugers
- right through WWII. Today,
- Lugers of all vintages and
- variations (of which there were
- many, in barrel length, proof
- markings, calibers, accessories,
- etc.) are prized by collectors.
