- SMITH & WESSON M29
-
- Long saddled with the onus
- of being the "world's most
- powerful handgun" - thanks in
- large part to Dirty Harry
- Callahan, who cautioned it would
- blow a punk's head "clean off" -
- the mythology that grew up
- around the .44 magnum cartridge
- did more for sales of Smith &
- Wesson's robust double-action
- revolver design than any amount
- of company advertising could
- have. Conceived as a special
- purpose hunting beltgun, the M29
- nevertheless found extremely
- limited use among actual law
- enforcement personnel (as
- opposed to the Hollywood sort).
- Prior to the era of
- double-staggered magazine 9mm
- spray-shooters, the big .44
- probably made some cops feel
- that they weren't likely to be
- outgunned on the street. Aside
- from the fact, however, that the
- magnum round kicks like a
- Clydesdale and emits enough
- muzzle blast to light up a
- darkened room, the officer
- unfortunate enough to use his
- .44 in a shooting would probably
- be assaulted on the legal front
- with allegations of "inhumane
- treatment" and "disregard of
- public safety" from the
- standpoint of the abundant
- penetration of its 240-grain,
- 1400 f.p.s. projectile.
-
- Having said this, it must be
- pointed out that milder .44
- Special ammunition may also be
- fired from this, or any other
- .44 magnum revolver, making such
- arms extremely versatile. As to
- the ferocious striking force of
- the big .44 - its ability to
- blow a perp's head "clean off" -
- such performance in a handgun of
- any chambering is entirely
- imaginary. "Stopping power" and
- other measures of performance
- depend as much upon bullet
- design as on caliber, as
- demonstrated by innovative
- ammunition makers such as
- Glaser, Cor Bon and Super Vel.
- No handgun offers the long-range
- knockdown power of a
- high-velocity rifle or the
- close-range killing
- effectiveness of a combat
- shotgun.
-
- One final note: the .44
- magnum is no longer - if it ever
- was - the "most powerful handgun
- in the world." That dubious
- distinction could be currently
- applied to either the single
- action .454 and .500 Linebaugh
- Magnums of Casull, or to the
- massive .50 caliber Desert Eagle
- auto so prominently featured in
- a number of recent action films.
