- GLOCK
-
- The Glock is at once the
- most innovative and least
- pretentious handgun in current
- production. It more or less
- constitutes an operating system
- unto itself, combining desirable
- features of double action
- revolvers (such as a consistent
- full-travel trigger pull) and
- self-loaders (interchangeable
- magazines, high capacity, slim
- cross-section). While achieving
- these goals, the Glock sits
- there on the table like the
- proverbial ugly duckling, its
- black matte slide and "plastic"
- grips belying the gleam of
- innovation buried within its
- guts.
-
- On the down side, the
- Glock's innovations have forced
- Police Departments (scores of
- which have jumped onto the Glock
- bandwagon) to re-train street
- personnel. Unlike traditional
- service autos, the Glock has no
- safety and no external hammer.
- If the Glock is loaded with a
- round in the chamber, it is
- ready to fire. And yet, thanks
- to an ingenious trigger
- mechanism, it remains "safe" in
- this mode until the trigger is
- squeezed. The trigger is
- actually a two-stage device
- whose protruding central tab
- must be depressed before the
- whole shebang can be pulled
- through its cycle, releasing the
- firing pin to strike the primer.
- The "lightness" of this trigger,
- coupled with the adrenalized
- muscle response of a frightened
- NYPD cop, led to the most
- litigious of several reported
- unintentional discharges
- associated with the gun. It
- also led to the adoption of the
- re-engineered "New York
- trigger," employing a heavier
- pull.
-
- Regardless of what the media
- may have claimed, it would be
- impossible for a Glock to pass
- undetected through modern
- security scanners. While it is
- indeed composed of a number of
- non-metal polymer parts, its
- barrel and key receiver parts
- remain tell-tale ordinance
- steel. And talk about durable:
- individual Glock pistols have
- fired hundreds of thousands of
- rounds of ammunition in
- continuous-fire torture
- sessions, interrupted only by
- the occasional swabbing out of
- powder-fouled barrels.
-
- The Glock is of Austrian
- heritage, though like its
- Beretta cousin it is now being
- produced in the U.S. It is
- available in a number of
- configurations and chamberings,
- including 9mm, 10mm (the new
- official round of the F.B.I.),
- .40 S & W, and .45 ACP. The
- Glock may be an ugly duckling,
- but its designers have been
- making dead ducks of the
- competition since its
- introduction to U.S. police and
- civilian markets in the mid
- '80's.
