- REMINGTON O/U DERRINGER
-
- Shortly after the Civil War,
- Remington Arms introduced an
- improved model of the
- derringer-style pocket pistol,
- first popularized by Henry
- Deringer (and used by Booth to
- dispatch Lincoln). The
- Remington iteration employed two
- stacked barrels to double the
- firepower, and incorporated
- breechloading technology,
- settling on a .41 rimfire
- cartridge as its standard
- loading. The bullet was of big
- enough diameter to inflict a
- killing blow, but the black
- powder charge that propelled it
- could only achieve an anemic 520
- f.p.s. by the time it exited
- the 3" barrel; andn while the
- wounded party might later pass
- away from either old age or lead
- poisoning, such ballistic
- performance would seldom lead to
- immediate incapacitation.
-
- The derringer has been a
- favorite of gamblers and other
- ne'er-do-wells of TV westerns;
- presumably even well-intentioned
- law-abiding folk have had
- occasion to secrete such a gun
- about their person, although
- they would be far better served
- by almost any pocket auto or
- small revolver (anyone who has
- tried to actually fire one of
- these little palm guns will
- undoubtedly know what I mean).
-
- Today, this same tragically
- non-ergonomic design is
- available in any standard
- caliber (from .22 to .44) from
- North American Arms Company.
- Lord knows why.
-
- The double derringer is
- single action and fires
- alternate barrels on successive
- pulls of the trigger. Reloading
- (should the shooter ever desire
- to repeat the experience) is
- accomplished by tipping up the
- barrels on their hinge, removing
- the spent casings and inserting
- fresh cartridges.
