- Techy(ish) Letters:- @7Write to the address, above (for any reason!)
- @5
- Err hi, we didn't get any techy letters this month, so we decided to
-
- make them all up. See below:

- Dear A.F:-
-
- Hi, I'm a figment of your imagination, but I have a problem.
-
- Is it possible to format disks to PC type (720k) if I use crossdos,
-
- if so how and what do I need.
-
- Yours faithfully, Someone we made up. #6More>>>

- Hi mister imagination:-
-
- Yes it can be done, first mount PC1, either by double clicking the
-
- PC1: icon located in storage, alternatively open a shell and type
-
- Mount PC1:
-
- Now load crossdos (tools/commodities).
-
- Go back to your shell window and type:
-
- Format Drive PC1: Nameofdisk PCDISK
- NOICONS
-
-
- Make sure that you have the MFM device in your devs: drawer,
-
- all should be okeydokey....

- Hello, I have an A1200 with an 80Meg hard drive, after being switched
-
- on for about 15-20 minutes, the machine always hangs up on me &
-
- it's p*ssing me off, help!
-
-
-
- @3A.F reply:-
-
- Err, sounds to me like your machine is broke. Funny enough.
-
- Probably a chip has gone down (hah hah) or a resistor has gone kaput,
-
- you'll have to take it to the nice repair man I'm afraid.
-
- Alternatively you could bin it.
-
-
-
- @4Dear A.F:-
-
- My friend and I both have A1200HD's. Whilst both are working fine,
- #6More>>>@4
- I always find that my mates machine loads programs much faster, it
-
- also formats much faster! Mine takes about 20 minutes to format using
-
- the workbench formatting process, my mates takes about 5 minutes, and
-
- his has a larger drive! Why? Is mine buggered?
-
-
-
- @3Dear Person I made up:-
-
- There's nothing wrong with either of your Hard drives. Has your
-
- mate got a 3.5" drive and you with a 2.5", are they both the same
-
- make? You stated they're both different sizes, so I presume it is possible
-
- that your mate has a higher spec, 3.5" drive?
-
- Is this so? I find 3.5" drive to be much faster than 2.5" drives, also
-
- you can get drives which are capable of different speeds, measured
- #6More>>>@3
- in Kb/s or Mb/s i.e 1 Meg per second, 800k per second or whatever,
-
- most drives hover around the 1Mb per second speed, although they
-
- can go much much faster. Older drives also tend to be much slower, my
-
- old Seagate 2.5" was rated by Misinfo (sysinfo) to run at 415k per second.
-
- My new gigabyte drive (I had to get that one in) is rated at just over
-
- 2Mb per second with misinfo, this is because it is a 3.5" and it is
-
- one of the faster types, although the lightening is faster.
-
- Which reminds me, does your mate have an 030, 040 .... etc?
-
- Does he have fastram? All these contribute to speed.
-
- Tarah.
