- When you type with your word
- processor, characters are added to
- the screen. If you look closely,
- you'll see that the characters are
- composed of dots.
- One of the expansion cards,
- called a display card, is for the
- monitor. The simplest card can
- display only ASCII text on the
- monitor. A Hercules card can
- display text and two color (black
- plus one color) graphics. This is
- called monochrome. A CGA card can
- display text in up to 16 colors or
- graphics in up to 4 colors. An EGA
- card can display text and graphics

- colors. And a VGA card is even
- higher resolution and can handle
- up to 256 colors.
- The monitor does not know about
- text. All it knows is how to put
- dots on the screen. The display
