  16.    When you type with your word
  17. processor, characters are added to
  18. the screen. If you look closely,
  19. you'll see that the characters are
  20. composed of dots.
  21.     One of the expansion cards,
  22. called a display card, is for the
  23. monitor.  The simplest card can
  24. display only ASCII text on the
  25. monitor. A Hercules card can
  26. display text and two color (black
  27. plus one color) graphics. This is
  28. called monochrome. A CGA card can
  29. display text in up to 16 colors or
  30. graphics in up to 4 colors. An EGA
  31. card can display text and graphics

  34. in a higher resolution, meaning
  35. more, smaller dots, in up to 16
  36. colors.  And a VGA card is even
  37. higher resolution and can handle
  38. up to 256 colors.
  39.    The monitor does not know about
  40. text. All it knows is how to put
  41. dots on the screen. The display
  42. card has to tell it about every
  43. character, number and punctuation
