- Once a program is transferred from the
- disk into the RAM chips, it is ready
- to be run. The program's instructions
- are read by the CPU and carried out.
- Perhaps part of the RAM will be used
- for a scratch pad to hold data as it
- is being changed. For instance, if
- you are writing a letter with a word
- processing program, that letter will
- exist in the RAM. If the power was
- turned off, the letter would be lost
- unless you first copy it onto a disk.
