  2. Massachusetts, USA, today announced the availability of its Knowledge
  3. Server medical reference database search software for multiple network
  4. environments.

  6. Originally developed for the Apple Macintosh and AppleShare (Apple
  7. Computer's network operating system), Knowledge Server is now available
  8. for use with IBM PC and compatible workstations, and a variety of PC-based
  9. network environments. Aries Systems' medical reference databases
  10. (including MEDLINE and CANCERLIT) can be accessed on most popular network
  11. operating systems, including Novell NetWare and NetWare Lite, LANtastic
  12. from Artisoft, and Sitka TOPS.

  14. The reference databases can be configured on CD-ROM or on high-performance
  15. magnetic disk storage. A suitably configured database server can support
  16. up to 20 simultaneous search sessions. Multiple servers can be configured
  17. to support even larger numbers of simultaneous users.

  19. Knowledge Server uses Aries Systems' innovative search technology -
  20. Knowledge Finder. Knowledge Finder accepts English-style topical queries,
  21. and ranks search results in order of their likely relevance. Designed for
  22. use by both novice and experienced searchers, Knowledge Finder's graphic
  23. user interface simplifies and enhances the process of accessing medical
  24. knowledge.

  26. Knowledge Server network configurations allow both PC and Macintosh
  27. workstations to access reference databases connected to either PC or
  28. Macintosh based database servers. Institutions can thus choose the
  29. server-network-workstation architecture that best suits their needs. Since
  30. Knowledge Server is offered on a database subscription basis, institutions
  31. can make their own, cost-effective hardware purchases, and avoid the high
  32. overhead and limited options of turnkey system purchases. Annual
  33. subscriptions for local area network access to a Knowledge Server MEDLINE
  34. database (with 3 simultaneous users) start at $2,895.

  38. physical databases and search software to interface with other established
  39. hardware and software standards. This means that our customers can take
  40. advantage of a wide range of networking and server technologies, and need

  45. various options available in open systems CD-ROM networking with Knowledge
  46. Server. It describes alternative server technologies, and network
  47. protocols and media. It also provides financial guidelines to assist in
  48. the preparation of an acquisition budget. It provides specific
  49. configuration suggestions for both Macintosh and PC-based server
  50. configurations. The report is available at no charge to medical libraries
  51. and health science institutions when requested on organization letterhead.
