  1. (TUCSON, AZ--April 1, 1992)--Artisoft, Inc. announced today that it will
  2. begin shipping its LANtastic for Macintosh system in the second quarter of
  3. calendar year 1992. Priced at $799, this system provides an unlimited
  4. amount of users a transparent integration of a Macintosh network and
  5. PostScript printers into the LANtastic network operating system
  6. environment, and enables realtime file-sharing between both environments.

  8. "By establishing the LANtastic network's interoperability with Macintosh
  9. networks, we are bringing the two leading peer-to-peer networks together
  10. for the first time," stated Jack Schoof (pronounced "shoaf"), Artisoft
  11. President and CEO.

  13. The LANtastic for Macintosh system establishes a PC to serve as a dedicated
  14. gateway between the Macintosh and LANtastic networks. PC servers on the
  15. LANtastic network are set up as logical drives on the gateway PC and
  16. appear as slightly modified Macintosh computer icons to users on the
  17. Macintosh network. Thus, Macintosh users see PC files and directories as
  18. they would standard Macintosh files and directories and use the Chooser to
  19. select printers attached to the LANtastic network.

  21. Slightly different for PC users, the LANtastic for Macintosh system
  22. establishes a dedicated gateway PC where users can access PostScript
  23. printers on the Macintosh network and where they can see Macintosh files
  24. which have been saved onto the gateway PC's hard drive. PC users can see
  25. and access any PostScript printer that is attached to the Macintosh
  26. network from their own LANtastic interface.

  28. Both sets of users can access the other set's files of the same file format
  29. (i.e. Microsoft Word and Excel or Aldus PageMaker. File attributes and
  30. record-locking are supported in both directions. In addition, any
  31. PostScript-compatible printer--even non-AppleTalk interface printers such
  32. as Hewlett Packard's LaserJet series--can be shared simultaneously between
  33. all workstations, both Macintosh and PC.

  35. The LANtastic for Macintosh system uses a Standard Macintosh User Interface
  36. and maintains all Apple security privileges normally available to
  37. Macintosh users. The gateway PC appears as an AppleShare server to the
  38. Macintosh user and files are accessed in the same fashion as with any
  39. other AppleShare server. The LANtastic for Macintosh system provides one
  40. AppleTalk Interface Board (Apple LocalTalk PC board, Ethernet, Token Ring)
  41. and requires one LANtastic workstation with 640K RAM, a
  42. LANtastic-compatible network adapter, Apple's System 6.0 or greater, and
  43. DOS 3.3 or greater.
