  9.     2750 : It was the Age of Happiness.  The Galactic Empire, now almost three
  10. hundred years old, controlled every habitable world in the galaxy.  The
  11. Imperial Capital at New Earth (planet 31) was the greatest megopolis ever.  The
  12. Imperial University at Amalthea brought together the most brilliant minds in
  13. history for the benefit of mankind.  There had been no wars for almost seven
  14. decades.  The massive Dreadnoughts of the Empire insured that peace would last
  15. forever.

  17.     But that was two-hundred fifty years ago.  In the year 2842, the Great
  18. Plague struck at the heart of the Empire.  Trillions died.  Entire planets were
  19. left lifeless after only a year.  Emperor Koligar IV himself fell victim,
  20. leaving his three nephews to vie for the throne.  What was to follow was the
  21. most destructive war the galaxy had ever known.

  23.     The youngest nephew, Rjakar, quickly had his older brother Chiriton
  24. assassinated and then declared himself Emperor.  Bayan, the third nephew, who
  25. had been exiled from New Earth in 2839 for political reasons, raised a navy
  26. from his supportive homeworld of Trantor, and with the help of several admirals
  27. in the Imperial Navy, attacked New Earth in 2844.  By taking key planets close
  28. to the capital, Bayan was able to isolate New Earth from the rest of the
  29. galaxy.  Rjakar held out for five years.  In 2849, Bayan launched his final
  30. assault against his cousin.  New Earth was pillaged, and the Imperial Palace
  31. was razed after Rjakar was captured.  He was swiftly executed by Bayan's own
  32. hand.

  34.     The seven years of civil war had destroyed the structure of the Empire.
  35. The plague had annihilated several worlds.  Fear of the plague led to
  36. widespread xenophobia.  Communication among worlds was rare.  Space pirates,
  37. almost eliminated two hundred years earlier, reappeared overnight.   With the
  38. Imperial Navy committed to the war at New Earth, and a galactic famine in
  39. progress, piracy was the only way, for many, to survive.  Bayan's consolidation
  40. of power in 2851, along with the discovery of a cure for the plague in 2852,
  41. brought together almost half of the former Imperial Worlds.  But Bayan had no
  42. interest in attempting to reinstate control over the devastated outer regions
  43. of the galaxy.  Slowly, but surely, the bacchanalian lifestyle of Bayan and his
  44. court corrupted the remnants of the Galactic Empire.  Trantor became a
  45. Sybarite's paradise as the new capital of the Empire.  Bayan's descendants
  46. retained control of the Empire for seventy-five years after his death in 2861,
  47. with the decay of the Empire growing throughout.

  49.     A revolt by Admiral Veqan of Aeci Alpha ended the rule of Trantor and
  50. Bayan's kin, returning the capital to New Earth.  Veqan's rule saw the
  51. rebuilding of New Earth and the first expansion of the Empire since the
  52. Imperial Civil War.  But his mysterious death in 2942, after only six years in
  53. power, ended all possibility of Imperial reconstruction.

  55.     For the past fifty-seven years, the Emperorship has been passed to and
  56. stolen by numerous admirals of the Imperial Navy.  The Galactic Empire now
  57. consists of only New Earth (still the capital) and the stronghold worlds of
  58. Amalthea, Trantor, Magrathea, Terminus, Ace's Place, Zarcon, Sharko, and
  59. Klinzhai (planets 32 through 39, respectively).

  61.                      II. The Rise of the Second Empire

  63.     You are one of Thirty powerful warlords.  Each of you has risen through
  64. the ranks of power on your homeworld.  Now, the time for the construction of
  65. the Second Galactic Empire has come.  Using military force (backed with
  66. economic force) you must build the foundations for the new empire.

  68.     But the old Empire still controls the strongest worlds in the galaxy and
  69. you must battle with the remnants of the Imperial Navy to capture them.
  70.  
  71.     Somewhere in the galaxy is the lost planet of Earth, the birthplace of
  72. mankind.  The extremely high habitability of Earth will allow the population
  73. to grow rapidly, providing a much needed workforce for the warlord who can
  74. capture it.
