- SUBJECT: Silver Xpress... Not just another Off-Line Mail Reader!
-
- New beta versions of Silver Xpress Mail Doors. I'm releasing them to the
- public to get the last minutes inputs from all Xpress sysops. This is
- your chance to express your input as a Xpress sysop before the official
- release. Really, I am very appreciative of any input you may have
- (Please direct your comments/input in the XPRESS_SYSOP echo). The
- previous release was so successful with comments and bug reports, I feel
- it was very successful to get it out to so many people. It really help.
- Thanks.

- Feature List
-
- Alot you are about to see will represent almost 2.5 years of vision,
- planning, listening to sysops and users like yourselves, and learning
- the market to develop a major off-line data communications system.
-
- Let me see if I can remember all the major highlights:
-
- * Note: Some items are not directly usable until new reader is available.
-
- - Xpress now has a new a local console similar to a BBS. very purty
- - Function keys for shelling to dos, includes a small DOS window.
- - Built-in Ansi driver for faster local speed.
- - New Xpress XYZ protocols (using Xpress XMT.EXE file transfer program)
- - Exec Swapping for low memory situations.
- - Support Desqvu and is aware of time sliceing for multi-lines.
- - Sound control (ie, lowering sound rather than turning it off)
- - new powerful flex select commands.
- - Estimatation of OPX file size calculated after mail scan.
- * - Xpress will now send the users's keywords to the reader.
- - File request transfer postponement. Files are attached to mail.
- * - Door accepts uploaded files created with the reader. Optionally
- send file to specific user.
-
- Now for the advance technology goodies!
-
- - The door is now completely ready for Gold Xpress with GX MODE. This
- is a "expert expert" level where minimum info and small special
- prompts are displayed. Excellent for any script system, but
- primarily designed for the Gold Xpress VideoText System (The Xpress
- programmble Videotext communication program). I originally
- prototyped Gold Jr with Telix so any good script language will not
- have a problem.
-
- - XAM - Xpress Answering Machine. Just like a Phone Answering machine
- but with mail. An user can now leave a mail recording and whenever
- someone tries to send mail to them, they will get the mail recording.
-
- - Xpress Service Calls. It is now possible to "Operate" on mail which
- is tossed into areas. Why? You'll see <grin> FaXXpress is just one
- reason. But this allows for 3rd party product integration to operate
- on mail.
-
- - Reader Bulletins for special groups of people. XPUSER now allows you
- to define a GROUP for a user. If you define a reader bulletin for
- that group, users belonging to the group will receive the bulletin.
- (Supports RA's user group number)
-
- - TOWHOM macros: ToWhom macros allow users to send mail to a GROUP,
- users with a certain access, and to ALL. But the twist is that the
- mail become personalized. For instance, I can send mail to @ALL@ (or
- !ALL! because the 2.28 reader uses the @ for a poplist) and all
- users will recieve this message like it was directly mailed to him.
- !10! sends mail to all users with access 10 or greater. @groupname@
- will send mail to all users associated with a certain groupname (you
- can use XPUSER to define groupnames for users). For example: @G001@
- will send mail to users in Group G001. Very Powerful. Whats nice
- about this is that users think it's personal direct mail :-) NOTE:
- I designed this mostly for sysops. I can see where I probably need
- an option in XPCFG to allow users to do this stuff.
-
- - Xpress Service Files. It is now possible to send special files to
- all or individual users. Sysop will be getting a utility and file
- specs to create service files. Designed for advance system
- integration at the reader system.
-
- * - Xpress is now compatible with Novell's MHS messaging system. For
- those all don't know what MHS is, MHS is to the commericial world
- what FidoNet is to the Hobby world. Although in some instances,
- Fidonet can be found in the commercial world. But by far, MHS is the
- PC commercial standard for LAN base electronic mail. X.400 is
- another on the drawing table.
-
- - Xpress is now ready to accept a new flat text file message format.
- The file spec is not totally defined but is is designed to
- facilitate service calls which generate new messages (called service
- messages) to be automatically tossed into the mail system. An
- example is a database inquiry report system, order entry acknowledge
- system or FaXXpress receipts.
-
- Thats about it. I might have missed a few things but over all what I
- have designed is a major product in off-line fax, data entry,
- database, image, mail reader systems. No one comes close to this
- technology but we'll soon see the copy-cats :-) But you know where you
- heard or seen it first! The funny thing about this all. it's HERE! it's
- not vapor!
-
- Complete file specs will be issued for the new Service calls, Service
- Files and all the other integration features.
-
- As far the reader, well, my major goal was to get the door completely
- finished and then concentrate on the reader with the new integration
- pieces. It's all there. Just lots of bugs to work out.
