- Gedcom
-
- GEDCOM stands for GEnealogical Data COMmunication. It
- is a standard by which genealogical information can be transferred
- between different computer systems. It was developed by the
- Projects and Planning Division in the Family History Department of
- The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
-
- With gedcom, you can trade information with other people
- who are doing genealogical research, provided that their program
- also supports it. Family Scrapbook supports the PAF v2.1/v2.2
- implementation of gedcom. Many other genealogy programs also
- support gedcom.
-
- Family Scrapbook should be capable of exporting and
- importing all of it's data via it's gedcom routines. Since most other
- genealogy programs do not support things like name changes and
- passenger list info, they probably won't be able to import everything.
- If you're a programer and you want to find out how I implemented
- gedcom to export something, get in touch with me.
-
- Note: The gedcom routines are contained in an external
- executable file named FSGED.EXE. This file can be run directly
- from DOS provided that Family Scrapbook has been run at least once
- to create the data files.
-
- Importing Data
-
- This option will read a gedcom file and add it's data to your
- Family Scrapbook files. All persons and families are added as new
- records. In other words, this routine will not change or erase any
- existing data. Do not import the same data more than once, or you
- will have duplicate data in Family Scrapbook.
-
- Exporting Data
-
- The three export options will let you store the data you select
- in a gedcom file. You may export a person, a whole family, or the
- entire Family Scrapbook database. Like the import routine, exporting
- will not change or delete any scrapbook data.
