Scribes wrote with sharpened reeds dipped in red or black ink. The papyrus maker also sewed pieces of papyrus paper together into scrolls. The longest known scroll is more than one and a half times the length of a basketball court. Even though the papyrus plant was plentiful in ancient Egypt, The paper was valuable.
