[HDNG]INTRODUCTION:[EHDNG][PARA][BOLD]For general information about Glasgow: [EBOLD]see [ULNE]University of Glasgow[EULNE]. Strathclyde University is situated on a number of hills in the middle of Glasgow, right in the city's central business district. The campus is modern and[ITAL] fairly ugly, but blends inconspicuously with the rest of the city.[EITAL] The original University building, an [ITAL]out of place[EITAL] redbrick affair, is [ITAL]rather lost[EITAL] amongst the more modern structures built since 1796 when, as a technological institute, it started to establish [ITAL]its good reputation[EITAL]. The [ITAL]compact [EITAL]campus consists of large department buildings and tower blocks and is fast expanding. [ITAL]But when it comes to greenery, you wouldn't find much less in an underground car park[EITAL] (however, the University gardens did win an award last year from the Incorporation of Gardeners of Glasgow). During 1993, the University was joined by the new Graduate Business School and from 1st April, the University 'merged' with Jordanhill College [ITAL](ie the University swallowed it)[EITAL], which created a second site housing the Faculty of Education.[HDNG]ATMOSPHERE:[EHDNG][PARA][ITAL]There's a very strong West Scotland contingent amongst students. In fact, it was traditionally a non-residential University and the students all lived locally. Nowadays, Strathclyde attracts many students from working class backgrounds and has an earthy feel. A lot of further education students (pre-degree level) gather on the campus as well, it being that kind of friendly and happening place where they want to hang out. Such students are on average around 17 years old and they lend the campus a youthful spirit. As a result, the University students themselves don't spend so much time on campus, instead making good use of Glasgow's other facilities.[EITAL][ITAL][HDNG]THE SITES:[EHDNG][EITAL][PARA]The Faculty of Education at Jordanhill has 3,000 students. In cheesey-chalk contrast with the main campus 5 miles away, it's a pleasant leafy site, lovely in summer. It has good sports facilities (often used by Rangers FC) and accommodation for 230 students. Students don't really need to travel between sites, but it's possible anyway by train (25mins) or bus (70p).[HDNG]THE CITY:[EHDNG][PARA][STAT][BULL] Population: 654,542 [BULL] London: 367miles [BULL] Edinburgh: 52miles[ESTAT][PARA]The Clyde flows out to sea from Glasgow to its Firth and towards the Isle of Arran. Inland, the city is surrounded by the rolling hills of Strathclyde. It used to be a centre for shipping and steel, before the city dropped into a recession as deep as a saying by Confucius. [ITAL]With enormous effort in recent years, Glasgow has been dragging itself up from the gutter, and has shown itself to be a thoroughly cultural, modern European city. [EITAL]In fact, in 1990, it was declared Cultural Capital of Europe ([ITAL]more by way of encouragement than appreciation[EITAL]). [ITAL]Glasgow is again beginning to deserve the pride that its people never lost. [EITAL] In the city centre ([ITAL]ignore the outskirts which are still fairly depressing[EITAL]), there is some [ITAL]magnificent [EITAL]architecture (with many buildings designed by home-grown Charles Rennie Mackintosh) and there are 35 museums and art galleries, including [ITAL]notably [EITAL]the Art Gallery and Museum in Kelvingrove Park, the Burrell Collection, the McLellan Galleries, the Tobacco Lords House and many National Trust properties. You might expect a city of this size to have loads of shops, public amenities and stuff like that - you wouldn't be wrong. [ITAL]Fed up with the sniping about Glasgow being miles better, the new catchphrase is 'Glasgow's Alive'. Crass, but true.[EITAL] [ITAL]In the under-belly of Glasgow life, there is a massive amount of drug abuse with both hard and soft drugs easily available. There is a considerable problem with related crime. The trains are fast and efficient, but there aren't many stops around the city.[PARA][BOLD]Underground: [EBOLD]There's an underground system costing 50p a trip.[PARA][BOLD]Taxis: [EBOLD][ITAL]Only worth it late at night.[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Bicycles: [EBOLD]Glasgow is hilly, and traffic is heavy.
