[HDNG]INTRODUCTION:[EHDNG][PARA][BOLD]For general information about Glasgow: [EBOLD]see [ULNE]University of [PARA]Glasgow[EULNE]. Strathclyde University is situated on a number of hills [PARA]in the middle of Glasgow, right in the city's central business [PARA]district. The campus is modern and[ITAL] fairly ugly, but blends [PARA]inconspicuously with the rest of the city.[EITAL] The original University [PARA]building, an [ITAL]out of place[EITAL] redbrick affair, is [ITAL]rather lost[EITAL] amongst the [PARA]more modern structures built since 1796 when, as a technological[PARA]institute, it started to establish [ITAL]its good reputation[EITAL]. The [ITAL]compact [EITAL][PARA]campus consists of large department buildings and tower blocks [PARA]and is fast expanding. [ITAL]But when it comes to greenery, you [PARA]wouldn't find much less in an underground car park[EITAL] (however, [PARA]the University gardens did win an award last year from the [PARA]Incorporation of Gardeners of Glasgow). During 1993, the [PARA]University was joined by the new Graduate Business School and [PARA]from 1st April, the University 'merged' with Jordanhill College [ITAL](ie [PARA]the University swallowed it)[EITAL], which created a second site housing [PARA]the Faculty of Education.[HDNG]ATMOSPHERE:[EHDNG][PARA][ITAL]There's a very strong West Scotland contingent amongst [PARA]students. In fact, it was traditionally a non-residential University [PARA]and the students all lived locally. Nowadays, Strathclyde attracts [PARA]many students from working class backgrounds and has an [PARA]earthy feel. A lot of further education students (pre-degree level) [PARA]gather on the campus as well, it being that kind of friendly and [PARA]happening place where they want to hang out. Such students are[PARA]on average around 17 years old and they lend the campus a [PARA]youthful spirit. As a result, the University students themselves [PARA]don't spend so much time on campus, instead making good use [PARA]of Glasgow's other facilities.[EITAL][ITAL][HDNG]THE SITES:[EHDNG][EITAL][PARA]The Faculty of Education at Jordanhill has 3,000 students. In [PARA]cheesey-chalk contrast with the main campus 5 miles away, it's [PARA]a pleasant leafy site, lovely in summer. It has good sports [PARA]facilities (often used by Rangers FC) and accommodation for [PARA]230 students. Students don't really need to travel between sites, [PARA]but it's possible anyway by train (25mins) or bus (70p).[HDNG]THE CITY:[EHDNG][PARA][STAT][BULL] Population: 654,542 [BULL] London: 367miles [BULL] Edinburgh: [PARA]52miles[ESTAT][PARA]The Clyde flows out to sea from Glasgow to its Firth and [PARA]towards the Isle of Arran. Inland, the city is surrounded by the [PARA]rolling hills of Strathclyde. It used to be a centre for shipping and [PARA]steel, before the city dropped into a recession as deep as a [PARA]saying by Confucius. [ITAL]With enormous effort in recent years, [PARA]Glasgow has been dragging itself up from the gutter, and has [PARA]shown itself to be a thoroughly cultural, modern European city. [EITAL]In[PARA]fact, in 1990, it was declared Cultural Capital of Europe ([ITAL]more by [PARA]way of encouragement than appreciation[EITAL]). [ITAL]Glasgow is again [PARA]beginning to deserve the pride that its people never lost. [EITAL] In the city[PARA]centre ([ITAL]ignore the outskirts which are still fairly depressing[EITAL]), there[PARA]is some [ITAL]magnificent [EITAL]architecture (with many buildings designed [PARA]by home-grown Charles Rennie Mackintosh) and there are 35 [PARA]museums and art galleries, including [ITAL]notably [EITAL]the Art Gallery and [PARA]Museum in Kelvingrove Park, the Burrell Collection, the McLellan [PARA]Galleries, the Tobacco Lords House and many National Trust [PARA]properties. You might expect a city of this size to have loads of [PARA]shops, public amenities and stuff like that - you wouldn't be [PARA]wrong. [ITAL]Fed up with the sniping about Glasgow being miles [PARA]better, the new catchphrase is 'Glasgow's Alive'. Crass, but true.[EITAL][PARA][ITAL]In the under-belly of Glasgow life, there is a massive amount of [PARA]drug abuse with both hard and soft drugs easily available. There [PARA]is a considerable problem with related crime. [EITAL][HDNG]TRAVEL:[EHDNG][PARA][BOLD]Trains: [EBOLD]Queen's Street and Central Stations are the mainline [PARA]stops, and run regular services to Edinburgh, London, [PARA]Manchester, Newcastle and Carlisle.[PARA][BOLD]Coaches: [EBOLD]National Express Services to London (ú25, 7hrs, [PARA]6/day); Edinburgh (ú6.30, 1:10hrs, 9/day); Newcastle (ú13.75, 4hrs,[PARA]1/day); Liverpool (ú13.25, 4:45hrs, 1/day).[PARA][BOLD]Car:[EBOLD] Good connections all over the country by road, including the [PARA]M74, A8/M8, A80/M80, A82, A77,and A736.[PARA][BOLD]Air: [EBOLD]Direct flights to Europe and the US, as well as shuttle links to[PARA]Heathrow and Gatwick, from Glasgow Abbotsinch Airport, 8 [PARA]miles from the city centre.[PARA][BOLD]Hitching: [EBOLD][ITAL]If you bus it out to the main roads, you may be OK, but [PARA]it's not a thumber's paradise.[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Local: [EBOLD]Buses are frequent, cheap and comprehensive - fares [PARA]from 45p. The trains are fast and efficient, but there aren't many [PARA]stops around the city.[PARA][BOLD]Underground: [EBOLD]There's an underground system costing 50p a trip.[PARA][BOLD]Taxis: [EBOLD][ITAL]Only worth it late at night.[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Bicycles: [EBOLD]Glasgow is hilly, and traffic is heavy. [ITAL]Bikes are useful, [PARA]but not essential.[EITAL][PARA][PARA]Strathclyde University is 5mins walk from Queen Street Station [PARA]and 10mins from Central Station.[HDNG]NOS and REQUIREMENTS:[EHDNG][PARA][BOLD]Arts/Soc Studs[EBOLD] 1,538 10pts[BOLD][PARA]Business[EBOLD] 2,114 12pts[BOLD][PARA]Education[EBOLD] 1,346 8pts[BOLD][PARA]Engineering[EBOLD] 2,436 12pts[BOLD][PARA]Science[EBOLD] 1,920 10pts[BOLD][HDNG]LIBRARIES and COMPUTERS:[EHDNG][EBOLD][PARA][BOLD][STAT][BULL] Books: 620,000 [BULL] Study places: 1,000 [BULL] Computer [PARA]workstations: 620[ESTAT][EBOLD][PARA]The Andersonian is the main library, but there's also the Fleck [PARA]Library (housing Chemistry), the Law Library, the Business and [PARA]Information Centre and the Jordanhill Library.[HDNG]CAREER PROSPECTS:[EHDNG][PARA][STAT][BULL] Careers Service [BULL] No of staff: 6full/3part [BULL] Unemployed [PARA]after 6mths (1992): 10%[ESTAT][HDNG]SPECIAL FEATURES:[EHDNG][PARA][BULL]There are 34 weeks in the academic year (which does mean [PARA]a bigger grant).[HDNG]FAMOUS ALUMNI:[EHDNG][PARA]John Logie Baird (inventor of the TV); Malcom Bruce MP (Lib [PARA]Dem); Dougie Donnelly (sports commentator); Margaret Ewing [PARA]MP (SNP); David Livingstone (African explorer, I presume); Lord [PARA]Reith (founder of the BBC).[HDNG]FURTHER INFO:[EHDNG][PARA]Prospectuses for undergrads, postgrads and mature students.
