[HDNG]CITY:[EHDNG][PARA][STAT][BULL] Price of a pint of beer: ú1 [BULL] Glass of wine: ú1.10[ESTAT][PARA][PARA][BOLD]Cinemas: [EBOLD]3 commercial cinemas - 2 art house - and a 14-screen multiplex out of town on the M57.[PARA][BOLD]Theatres: [EBOLD](5) 2 national touring venues (the Empire and the Liverpool) for subsidised companies where you can see shows before they transfer to London's West End. Also, there are the [ITAL]often controversial and innovative[EITAL], but financially threatened Everyman Theatre, the Neptune and the [ITAL]small, but beautiful[EITAL] Unity theatre which hosts an [ITAL]unconventional [EITAL]array of drama, dance and comedy.[PARA][BOLD]Pubs: [EBOLD][ITAL]Liverpool's pubs can vary from Berni Inn style drop outs to ultra-scene hang outs like Ye Cracke (Lennon and crew drank here). [EITAL] Many have late licences till 1am serving mainly Stones, Whitbread and Higsons. [PUSH]push[EPUSH][ITAL]plugs: Flannagan's Apple [EITAL]and [ITAL]Rosie O'Grady's (Irish pubs with live folk music); Baa Bar (trendy); The Philharmonic (Grade II listed loos). But in Liverpool, you don't pub it, you club it...[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Clubs/discos: [EBOLD][ITAL]Forget Manchester![EITAL] Liverpool has more clubs per head of population than anywhere else in England. Some, unfortunately, have latched onto the idea that they can charge ú5 or ú6 for entrance, but there are still plenty for just ú1 even on a Saturday night. [ITAL]Most notably, there's 'Casablanca', (ú2) a veritable grotto of classic cuts and techno funk, and a downstairs bar that makes the black hole of Calcutta look deserted, where artists, actors and playwrights gather to eat chips and drink beer in a formerly illegal hang-out. Best of all, in Liverpool - unlike London where the twentysomethings are forever on a quest for the most happening spot - everyone has somewhere to go whatever their musical tastes. Other [EITAL][PUSH]push[EPUSH][ITAL]plugs: 'Pink Parrot' (Gothy/Indie, ú2); 'Club X' (cellar with horrid bogs, Indie/Rock, ú2.50); 'Krazy House' (cheap drink, cool atmos, top l ú3/ú4); Nation (house/garage).[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Music venues:[EBOLD] The [ITAL]premiÅre [EITAL]venues are the Empire (Tom Jones, Lloyd Cole, Bolshoi Ballet), The Royal Court for top bands (Deacon Blue, Teenage Fanclub) and the [ULNE]Liverpool John Moores University[EULNE]'s Haigh Building. [ITAL] It's also worth dropping in on the many other smaller venues and clubs to catch the vibe, such as the Lomax, where the Fall recently snarled. Unfortunately[EITAL], the Cavern Club where Brian Epstein first saw the Fabs is long gone, but has been replaced by a new club with the same name next door to the original site.[PARA][BOLD]Other:[EBOLD] [ITAL]If none of the above appeal and you've checked that you still have a pulse, why not try the bowling alley or the many cabaret venues where the legendary Scouse wit lives on.[EITAL][PARA][PARA][ITAL][HDNG]UNIVERSITY:[EHDNG][EITAL][PARA][ITAL][GRPH]E2[EGRPH][STAT][BULL] Price of a pint of beer: ú1.15 [BULL] Glass of wine: 90p[ESTAT][EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Bars: [EBOLD]There are 2 bars in the Haigh (the SU building), including a wine bar and The Venue - [ITAL]both very popular. [EITAL]There are other smaller bars at some halls and the further flung sites.[PARA][BOLD]Theatres: [EBOLD]2 theatre venues around the University.[PARA][BOLD]Cinemas: [EBOLD]In the Haigh, the SU shows weekly films including, recently, JFK and The Jungle Book.[PARA][BOLD]Clubs/discos and music venues:[EBOLD] Hardy's (900), a local nightclub, has been bought by the SU, and entrance is free. Bands play upstairs. The Haigh Venue (500) pumps it up thrice weekly. [ITAL]On a more tame level, many of the students in the more remote halls, particularly I M Marsh, make do with Friday discos.[EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Recent bands:[EBOLD] BjÜrn Again; Doppelganger; Bay City Rollers.[PARA][BOLD]Cabaret:[EBOLD] Occasional chuckles.[PARA][BOLD]Others:[EBOLD] There are an annual Xmas Charity Ball, odd goings on on Sundays (eg barfly, bar bungee, etc) and quiz nights on Tuesdays.[HDNG]EATING OUT:[EHDNG][PARA][ITAL]Students outside the halls don't muster much for mealtimes. The Haigh is the place to be for students who can't stand eating alone[EITAL], with [ITAL]reasonably-priced [EITAL]food, especially pizzas. Hardy's has a coffee shop called Bogart's, [ITAL]with sullen waitresses[EITAL]. Alternatively, there's the University cafeteria.
