[HDNG]IN COLLEGE:[EHDNG][PARA][STAT][BULL] Catered: 90%+[ESTAT][PARA][BOLD]Availability:[EBOLD] To an even greater extent than at Oxford, [ITAL]one of Cambridge's best benefits is the opportunity to live in college accommodation[EITAL]. All colleges offer rooms to all 1st years and most offer rooms to most finalists too. Even 2nd years have a good chance of living in (about 1/2 do). [ITAL]The rooms vary from palatial suites to pokey cupboards without central heating although most are fairly impressive.[EITAL] Older rooms around the college courts and quads can look spectacular from the outside, but the more modern rooms tend to offer better living conditions. It's rare to have to share a room, however, double sets (2 linked rooms) are fairly common. There is only limited availability for couples and even less for students with children. Each college makes its own arrangements - for example, Newnham, Lucy Cavendish and New Hall are for women only - but for the petty particulars, take a peek at the following entries.[PARA][BOLD]Car parking:[EBOLD] Students aren't allowed to bring cars to their colleges, but, in fact, some outer colleges (where parking is less impossible) don't bother too much.[HDNG]EXTERNALLY:[EHDNG][PARA][GRPH]A3[EGRPH][STAT][BULL] Ave rent: รบ47[ESTAT][PARA][BOLD]Availability:[EBOLD] You would have thought that with so many students concentrated in, let's face it, not the world's largest city, it would be near impossible to find suitable housing. [ITAL]In fact, it's a relief to discover the difficulties aren't as bad as they could be.[EITAL] [ITAL]The hand-me-down housing method has kept the severest problems at bay. [EITAL] It has spread to individual colleges too, who often have their own arrangements with individual landlords and frequently act as landlords themselves for many of the houses and hostels around town. [ITAL]Students do have to keep an eye open for a few landlords who're willing to make a fast buck from a student's bad luck.[EITAL] Usually, livers out share houses of between 3 and 6 people, but digs (a room in a landlord's house) are not uncommon. [ITAL]Relations with the local community are generally pretty good and there are no student ghettoes, although Mill Road and Huntingdon Road are popular. The only place which students should rule out is the north of the city, because it's easy enough to find something closer.[EITAL][PARA][PARA][ITAL][STAT][BULL] Renting: 10%[ESTAT][EITAL][PARA]For fast relief students can refer to the Accommodation Syndicate (18 Silver Street) for a prescription with a roof. They keep a list of suitable accommodation, often a little pricier than those on the open market but always up to scratch.[ITAL] [EITAL]It's worth remembering that students are required to live within 3 miles of the city centre during term time which rules out the [ITAL]beautiful [EITAL]surrounding villages even for those with a car.
