[HDNG]IN COLLEGE:[EHDNG][PARA][STAT][BULL] Catered: 90%+[ESTAT][PARA][BOLD]Availability:[EBOLD] To an even greater extent than at Oxford, [ITAL]one of [PARA]Cambridge's best benefits is the opportunity to live in college [PARA]accommodation[EITAL]. All colleges offer rooms to all 1st years and [PARA]most offer rooms to most finalists too. Even 2nd years have a [PARA]good chance of living in (about 1/2 do). [ITAL]The rooms vary from [PARA]palatial suites to pokey cupboards without central heating [PARA]although most are fairly impressive.[EITAL] Older rooms around the [PARA]college courts and quads can look spectacular from the outside, [PARA]but the more modern rooms tend to offer better living conditions. [PARA]It's rare to have to share a room, however, double sets (2 linked [PARA]rooms) are fairly common. There is only limited availability for [PARA]couples and even less for students with children. Each college [PARA]makes its own arrangements - for example, Newnham, Lucy [PARA]Cavendish and New Hall are for women only - but for the petty [PARA]particulars, take a peek at the following entries.[PARA][BOLD]Car parking:[EBOLD] Students aren't allowed to bring cars to their [PARA]colleges, but, in fact, some outer colleges (where parking is less [PARA]impossible) don't bother too much.[HDNG]EXTERNALLY:[EHDNG][PARA][GRPH]A3[EGRPH][STAT][BULL] Ave rent: รบ47[ESTAT][PARA][BOLD]Availability:[EBOLD] You would have thought that with so many students [PARA]concentrated in, let's face it, not the world's largest city, it would [PARA]be near impossible to find suitable housing. [ITAL]In fact, it's a relief to [PARA]discover the difficulties aren't as bad as they could be.[EITAL] [ITAL]The [PARA]hand-me-down housing method has kept the severest problems [PARA]at bay. [EITAL] It has spread to individual colleges too, who often have [PARA]their own arrangements with individual landlords and frequently [PARA]act as landlords themselves for many of the houses and hostels [PARA]around town. [ITAL]Students do have to keep an eye open for a few [PARA]landlords who're willing to make a fast buck from a student's bad[PARA]luck.[EITAL] Usually, livers out share houses of between 3 and 6 people,[PARA]but digs (a room in a landlord's house) are not uncommon. [ITAL][PARA]Relations with the local community are generally pretty good and [PARA]there are no student ghettoes, although Mill Road and Huntingdon [PARA]Road are popular. The only place which students should rule out [PARA]is the north of the city, because it's easy enough to find [PARA]something closer.[EITAL][PARA][PARA][ITAL][STAT][BULL] Renting: 10%[ESTAT][EITAL][PARA]For fast relief students can refer to the Accommodation [PARA]Syndicate (18 Silver Street) for a prescription with a roof. They [PARA]keep a list of suitable accommodation, often a little pricier than [PARA]those on the open market but always up to scratch.[ITAL] [EITAL]It's worth [PARA]remembering that students are required to live within 3 miles of [PARA]the city centre during term time which rules out the [ITAL]beautiful [EITAL][PARA]surrounding villages even for those with a car.
