  3.      GREETINGS AND GOODBYES
  4. Apart from the usual and ?QUé ONDA?, ?QUé TRANSAS? is a hip
  5. way to ask what's up or to imply "What's the deal?"
  6. (transaction). BIEN TRANSA, on the other hand means someone
  7. is a cheat. Recently you hear ?CóMO ESTAMOS? as a greeting.
  8. This "How are we doing?" has a friendly ring and is good for
  9. the beginner who can't sort out which second person form he
  10. wants to use.

  12. Popular ways to say "See you later" are NOS VEMOS (we'll see
  13. each other) or just LUEGO (later), with AL RATO (in a little
  14. while) for short-term separations. More formally, one
  15. usually hears QUE TE VAYA BIEN (fare you well). BAYBAY
  16. (pronounced "bye-bye") is considered hip in Mexico, just as
  17. we use "ciao," which is also used in Latin America and
  18. particularly the heavily Italian Argentina, where it is
  19. spelled "CHIAU."

  23. SIMóN, IS, SáBANAS, CILINDROS, SIFóN, CIGARROS, and the
  24. POCHISMO or "Spanglish" expression, "CLARO QUE yes," (a
  25. common expression, used in the same spirit that we would say
  26. "Who, moi?") CLARO is, of course, the way Spanish speakers
  27. say, "Of course," and slangsters often express "sure," "you
  28. bet," etc. as CLARóN, or CLARINETE.

  31. NEL is popular, especially on the street, and as a sassy
  32. response like "Nope" or "Nah," you also hear NEL PASTEL, and
  33. NONES CANTONES.

  35. NADA or NO HAY Big concepts in Mexico--NO HAY, NO HAY is a
  36. TV catch phrase seen on bumper stickers and decals
  37. (CALCOMANíAS in Spanish) and often good for a laugh.

  39. Other forms of "no got" are NADAZA, ONIA, NENéL, NI MARTA,
  40. (and the Spanishized INGLESITO "never in MAI COCHIN LAIF").

  42. NI JOTA and other "NI" expressions are often used to mean
  43. you didn't understand something. If someone says,
  44. "?ENTIENDES?" a response of "NI MARTA" means "Not a word."
  45. NI SUEñOS is a comeback to keep in mind, by the way--it
  46. means "Not in your wildest dreams."

  49. Even a simple word like "I" gets slanged. MELóN, MENTA, ME
  50. MANTA, YOLANDA, and the CALó gutter slang, MENDURRIA are
  51. heard.

  54. Instead of Tú or TI, slangsters often use words like TUNAS,
  55. TIBURCIO, and the CALó expression MENDORASQUI for "you."
