- BORDER SLANG
- Spanglish, INGLESITO, and CHOLISMOS
-
- Border jargon doesn't just derive from the blending that
- infuriates purists on both sides; it has it's own founts of
- new expressions, many from the BARRIOS of Tijuana and Los
- Angeles (or, as the PACHUCOS would say it, "LOS"). Here's a
- quick glimpse at this complex web of language.
-
- CHOLOS are variously L.A. street punks, Mexican American
- gangsters, or (according to Mexicans) any sort of low rider
- low-lifes that come south of the border. Though the word is
- ill-defined, there is a definite CHOLO style, though it
- might change. CHOLOS are the cultural descendants of the
- PACHUCOS (or CHUCOS), who in turn followed the zoot suit
- LATINOS of the 1950's. Much of the border lingo is their
- invention, although much is also coined by recent immigrants
- struggling with the language.
-
- The most notable phrase in CHOLO Spanish is "ESE" (that) as
- an address or referring to someone. Also famous are "AHí TE
- HUACHO" (I'll "watch" you here--I'll see you later) which is
- frequently stylized even more to "AYTE GUACHO." The CHOLO
- CALó is characterized by phrases like SáCALA (take it out)
- for "spare me some dope," TIRAR LA VUELTA (throw the corner)
- for "to die," NUESTRO BARRIO RIFA SIN ZAFOS (our
- neighborhood fights all the time).
-
- Some words are merely slurred Spanish, like "QUIUBO" from
- ?QUé HUBO? to mean "What's with you?" Some are twisted down
- from English like a customized motorcycle; BIKLAS (bikes,
- motorbikes) for instance, or CHOPEAR for "chopping" a car,
- BLOFEAR for bluffing at poker, or grabbed straight out of
- English like LOS BABIDOLS.
-
- Others are complex puns and jokes, with syllables added on
- over the years until they emerge as enigmas like the famous
- NARIZ BOLEADA (polished nose) to mean simply NADA. At it's
- best, the border slang is free-wheeling and spontaneously
- creative: There is little theory behind a sign that says, SE
- FIXEAN FLATS or a waitress calling for CREMA DE WHIP.
