  5. PADRE
  6. Is the most direct equivalent, as in "He's a really cool
  7. singer," ES CANTANTE MUY PADRE. Can be used impersonally,
  8. like "Far out!" !AY, QUE PADRE! Extremely cool would be
  9. PADRISMO.

  11. SUAVE
  12. While it means "smooth" or "soft," SUAVE also has a definite
  13. equivalence to "cool" and SUAVECITO is cooler yet. The Camel
  14. Filter "cool character" billboards in Mexico say UN TIPO
  15. SUAVE.
  16.  
  17. CHINGóN
  18. A tougher, more masculine, street connotation, it could
  19. describe a car, motorcycle, or person and might be thought
  20. of as meaning "stud." Not polite, but highly visible on
  21. T-shirts and caps. QUE COCHE MáS CHINGóN is "What a cool
  22. car."

  24. PRENDIDO
  25. PRENDER means to turn on a light or light a fire, so
  26. something MUY PRENDIDO is a real turn-on. ME PRENDE means
  27. "it turns me on."

  29.      UNCOOL
  30. GACHO
  31. !QUE GACHO! means "That sucks!" or "Bummer" or "What a
  32. drag." ERES GACHO means "You stink." NO SEAS GACHO is "Don't
  33. be a drag" or "Come off it."

  35. CHINGADO
  36. Screwed up, jerked around, or simply fucked as in the
  37. T-Shirts that say ESTOY CHINGADO.

  39.      FOXY
  40. Adjectives that can be feminized by changing the final "o"
  41. to "a" are LINDO, BONITO, and BUEN MOZO (good looking). Only
  42. men are referred to as CUADRADO--"built" or "buff." Women
  43. can be CUERO--"stacked" or "built." Women are cute--PRECIOSA
  44. or MONA, pretty--CHULA, beautiful--BELLA, HERMOSA or
  45. gorgeous--PRIMOROSA. A beauty is UN PRIMOR, or UNA BELLEZA.

  48.      BREAD, DOUGH
  49. Most common slang for money in border areas is FERIA, which
  50. can mean "money" or "pocket change," depending. NO TRAIGO
  51. FERIA would indicate, "I don't have any change." Further
  52. south, one hears LANA, which literally means "wool" but
  53. probably is short for PORCELANA. DE LANA means rich, so you
  54. hear odd phrases like TORTA DE LANA which means, not "wool
  55. sandwich," but a rich chick.

  57. MENDIGO means "beggar," but when accented on the first
  58. syllable becomes a deprecative adjective similar to "darned"
  59. or "cotton picking," or a noun similar to CABRóN.

  61.      TOTALLY, TO THE MAX
  62. REMATE is an auction, but has a slang sense of "all the
  63. way," so UN LOCO DE REMATE for instance is a total nut.
  64. Another expression, DE HUESO COLORADO (red-boned) means
  65. dyed-in-the-wool, "totally," "last ditch," a diehard. It's
  66. often used to describe team fans or political partisans.
