- It was a cold and rather blustery day in November that heralded the
- arrival of the Kruger family to their new home in Zagreb. Misty and
- overcast, the leaves long since fallen, a rather barren landscape
- confronted Anne Kruger as she stepped from the carriage. She drew a
- sigh as she looked up and down the platform. No sign of the man supposed
- to meet her. Well, first things first, she thought and turned to beckon
- her two children from the train.
- At that moment she gasped as she felt a hand on her shoulder. A heavy hand,
- gloved in rough leather, grasping her shoulder with an insistence which
- startled her and, she realized later, drew a certain fear. She turned to
- face the owner who announced: "You are Anne Kruger. I have come for you."
