  14. Thank you for proving my point.  Since not being found guilty ranges from
  15. the extreme (the accused proves conclusively that they didn't commit the
  16. crime of which they are accused) to the gray (the case is largely one of
  17. circumstantial evidence, which doesn't convince the jury), although we are
  18. obliged to let the accused go free, only someone very naive would claim that
  19. the reputation of the accused is restored.  If you don't believe that, ask
  20. anyone who's ever been accused of child sexual abuse, which is basically
  21. impossible to disprove.  And even if it were, the mud sticks.  Which is why
  22. I find it offensive to hear this kind of crap from the mass media.  And I
  23. think you are being disingenuous to not admit that although you are correct
  24. in the technical sense, the public at large will read the worst into it.
  25. And they are probably safe from a lawsuit, since the tabloids have honed this
  26. skill to a fine art.  "Accused child-abuser Ted Frank arrested by State
  27. Police!"  What they don't tell you is that the accusation of child abuse was
  28. made by your ex-wife 3 years ago, with no substantiating evidence, and was
  29. dropped.  And the reason you were arrested was because the statie who pulled
  30. you over found that your license had expired the day before and you hadn't
  31. gotten around to renewing it yet.  Of course, that's not what happened in
  32. this case, but the dark and dirty part of people that this tactic appeals to
  33. in precisely what headlines like this appeal to.
