- Huh? Jesus certainly didn't hold this position! Remember what he said?
- Not one iota of the Law (Torah) and Prophets would pass away. What Christ
- did was move away from doctrinaire following of the law and ask for following
- the spirit. Christ went BEYOND the literal requirements of the OT. Read the
- passages in Matthew 5. Christ goes BEYOND murder, to hate. BEYOND adultery
- to lust, BEYOND an 'eye for an eye' to turn the other cheek.
-
- The OT was extremely important to Christ. To quote Him in Matthew 5:
-
- [Matthew 5, NIV]
-
- "(17)Do not think I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I
- have not come to abolish them, but to fulfill them. (18)I tell you
- the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter,
- not the least stroke of the pen, will by any means disappear from the
- Law until everything is accomplished. (19)Anyone who breaks one of
- the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same
- will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices
- and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of
- heaven. (20)For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses
- that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly
- not enter the kingdom of heaven."
-
- There are verses where Christ modifies the law somewhat, but they are when
- he goes to the spirit of the issue (eg Matthew 12:1-14, 15:1-16). He goes
- to the issue of the heart not of empty action.
-
- All of Jesus teaching is grounded in the OT. To ignore the OT is to ignore
- the framework that Christ used to build the new covenant. Without the OT,
- there can be no claim that Christ was the Messiah...how could there be?
-
- Try studying the Bible a bit...
