- Subject: President Andrew Johnson's Genealogy Question

- A while back I posted a query on the net about the genealogy of
- President Andrew Johnson. I received several replies and Sue
- Funk (thanks again, Sue) sent me copies of the North Carolina
- Genealogical Newletter about Andrew Johnson and his father
- Jacob Johnson. The articles stated that Andrew Johnson's father
- was not from Virginia and that Margaret Johnson (my many great
- grandmother) was not his sister. The article elaborated on the
- Johnson family and it gave me another lead into the Henkle
- (Henckel) family. Well, I let this pass and went off in other
- areas.
-
- One of these areas was the search for Hannah Henkle, several of
- my (distant) cousins (thanks Ashley and Jim) replied to me about
- the Henckel Family. I discovered, much to my delight, a book about
- the Henckel Family in my local library (thanks again, Jean Paul).
- This past weekend I spent several hours with this book and discovered
- that President Andrew Johnson's line was in this book and his grandaughter
- Margaret Johnson (Patterson) Bartlett daughter of Martha Johnson
- and David Trotter Patterson contributed the genealogical information
- on President Andrew Johnson! She even documented the connection
- through Margaret Johnson (my many great grandmother). She stated
- that her grandfather (President Andrew Johnson) was a descendant of
- Hannah Henkle and Arthur Johnson. My great great grandmother Rachel
- (Skidmore) Scott also contributed to the book and she also gave the
- compilers the same information.
-
- Now my question, who can one believe? Do you go with the prominent
- genealogists/historians or your own relations? I would hope that the
- grandaughter of President Johnson would have known her own family
- line. My great great grandmother didn't, to my knowledge, even know
- her distant cousin so how could have both come up with the same
- data?
-
- Thanks
-
- Mike
