  13. Does anyone know of the location of West Florida County in the 1820's?
  14. I have an ancestor, Morris Pendergast, on the 1820 FL census, and I
  15. can't wait until I get to Clayton Library in Houston to find out where
  16. it is. I assume he was an immigrant from Ireland, and so I'm also in the
  17. dark about the port of entry for people in Florida, does anyone know this too?

  19. The family name now is Prendergast (in my family, at least) but I will list
  20. some of the variants I have seen:

  29. The name originates from Preulirlegast or Preudlirlegast, a Fleming who
  30. according to some sources went with William the Conqueror on his
  31. adventure. From there, the name goes two places, to Berkshire where it
  32. dies out supposedly, and to Wales. Maurice de Prendergast of Wales was one of
  33. the Normans who went to Ireland along with Maurice fitzGerald. It was said that
  34. Maurice de Prendergast married a daughter of Richard fitzGilbert (Strongbow),
  35. of the house of Clare, but I haven't made that connection. According to the book
  36. "A Dictionary of Surnames", all Prendergasts are assumed to be of the line
  37. of Maurice de Prendergast. Help anyone?
