- If this is possible to receive mitochondria from more than one
- source, then the strains will compete with each other.This is,I believe,
- well-documented in European house-mice.As far as I can see,we have
- therefore got a situation where the 'fitter' mitochondria will tend to
- drive out all others in the population.Also,this will happen rather
- faster than changes in nuclear DNA.So,as far as I can tell,the fact that
- all human mitochondria seem to have a common ancestor X million years
- ago, actually tells us rather little about the number or nature of women
- (or men) that were around then.
