  35. Let me try to communicate better, having obviously botched it the
  36. first time - I did not suggest that there is, or is not, any such
  37. thing as satanic ritual abuse.  What I was commenting on is what
  38. automatic reaction is engendered in various groups by the suggestion
  39. that such a thing exists.

  41. Had I made the same posting in the other newsgroups I mentioned, 
  42. I would have been upbraided just as thoroughly for disagreeing
  43. with that particular group's views.  (Actually, that might have
  44. made an interesting experiment.)

  46. I was involved with the Department of Corrections in Oregon when
  47. the satanism road show made the rounds a few years ago, and had 
  48. a hell of a time settling down a whole office full of probation
  49. officers who thought the minions of the devil were about to 
  50. descend on Portland.  So, just for the record, I know how this
  51. jerks the chains of all the Christians who don't know us well.
  52. And I know that reacting to it with other than thoughtful, deliberate
  53. consideration makes us look to them like we have something to hide.
