  14. I would like some information on the use of Prednisone,
  15. especially in relation to it's use as a treatment for leukemia, or
  16. leukemia-like conditions.

  18. Background: My Dad (age 75) was recently diagnosed as having a
  19. pre-leukemic condition.  An original diagnosis of Acute Myeloid
  20. Leukemia (AML) was retracted after repeated bone marrow tests.  All of
  21. his blood levels were low: platelets, white blood count, and red blood
  22. count (I don't have the numbers, though).  The bone marrow tests (2)
  23. showed a large amount of fibrostic tissue, a characteristic of the M7
  24. subtype of AML.  But apparently the lack of leukemic cells in the
  25. blood made the doctors back off of this diagnosis.  Now they will only
  26. say they see some "leukemia-like" cells, and he has a "pre-leukemic
  27. condition", but not AML (or CML).  (I have been reading alot about
  28. leukemia, and have never heard mention of this.  Most references say
  29. that a leukemia diagnosis is relatively straightforward, and none
  30. mentions a pre-leukemic condition, even when discussing the transition
  31. from chronic to acute leukemia.)

  33. He has been given platelets and blood transfusions as an outpatient,
  34. going to the hospital once or twice a week to give or get blood.  He
  35. has just begun a treatment plan of prednisone (a type of steroid,
  36. yes?), 20mg tablets, three times daily.  How would prednizone help his
  37. condition?  Does it stimulate blood production?  Bone marrow growth?
  38. Chemotherapy is being considered as a next step, if he does not
  39. respond to this treatment.
