- I have a few questions which I hope to find a medical explanation answer for
- -- as opposed to myth or lore.
-
- I was diagnosed about 1 yr ago, with what appears to be Ankylosing Spondilitis.
- Neither my Drs, nor I, are completely convinced of the diagnosis; but there
- is history and evidence of an inflammatory process.
- [Pos bone scan & antigens, respond well to NSADs, reduced mobility, hot,
- painful joints, etc.] It is early in the process -- no ankylosing evident yet.
-
- The inflammation (and associated pain/stiffness) goes away when
- I am either in a dry climate, or during the warm season here in
- the Pacific Northwest. So during those times, I do not take the
- anti-inflammatory meds. I have begun to get stiff again, and notice
- pain on waking, etc., but it is not as bad as in the past and
- I hesitate to take NSADs, for that reason only. (Indomethacin 75 mg SR)
-
- My Questions:
-
- 1. Is a cold/wet climate a "factor" in the inflammation, ie..
- could moving to a different climate do more than alleviate
- some of the pain? Is this known to have any effect on
- slowing the inflammation and associated problems?
- Conversely: Does living in a cold/damp climate accelerate it?
-
- 2. Should I use the anti-inflammatory drugs when I feel the onset
- of pain/stiffness, even if the pain is "tollerable" ?
- Are they mostly for my comfort, or do they serve another purpose?
-
- 3. Last year most the pain was in the lower back and hips. Now
- I am experiencing more of it in the neck/high back region.
- It is getting painful to straighten my shoulders and harder
- to maintain erect posture. It's still possible -- but is
- painful and I have to work on it in the mornings.
- Am I to expect this moving around of joint pain/stiffness?
- (Maybe someone with AS knows the answer for this?)
-
- Thanks much,
