- Hi, Holly-
-
- I'm no doctor, just a poor working soul who's had the misfortune of having
- 13 sprained ankles, so my answer is from accumulated experience.
-
- Usually what happens when you sprain something is that the ligaments in the
- affected joint are streched or torn and all the tiny little blood veins in
- the area are broken, causing the swelling and discoloration (bruising).
- As the veins heal and new blood is pumped into the area the discoloration
- starts to go away. In your case, 6 days sound normal to me (it does depend
- on the severity of the sprain). Swelling should start to reduce in 10 days
- to 4 weeks, again depending on severity.
-
- Keep on checking with your doctor, though, just to make sure it is a sprain
- and that complications don't arise. I'd also consider seeing a therapist or
- a sports trainer/specialist; they usually have lots of experience in dealing
- with sprains. AND DON'T USE YOUR THUMB UNTIL YOU GET AN O.K. from whichever
- professional is taking care of you. I've pulled the macho thing a couple of
- times with my earlier sprains and had to spend extra, painful time hobbling
- around.
-
- I hope this helps put at ease, Holly, and I'll be glad to answer any more
- questions that my experience may cover.
