- I am a data point for a controlled fat intake approach to lowering
- triglycerides:
-
- [Perhaps we could argue my approach confounds sugar control with
- fat control]
-
- The docs have told me that I am a Type IV hyperlipedemic. When I
- was 32 my Total cholesterol was 140 and my triglycerides were 130.
- By age 36 my cholesterol was 172 and my trigly was 400. I was
- about the same 150-200 T.C. and 300-500 trigly till.....

- In recent years I have become bigger, but not fatter to the eye.
- No beer gut or love handles, just big all over. WHen I started
- this program, people around me did not understand because I wasn't
- a fat boy.

- My clothed weight is now holding steady at about 195 lbs.
-
- My method is to limit my fat intake to a target of 40 grams Average per
- day (did not discriminate betw sat, unsat, monosat). For the first
- couple of months (Feb and Mar) I averaged about 1600-1700 kcal per
- day. Because I'm blessed to be a data junkie :-) I kept very
- righteous records from February thru mid October when I just lost
- the enthusiasm for record keeping. I gradually worked up to about
- 2200 kcal per day by Sept all the while losing weight till about
- August when I stabilized in the mid 190s. This suggests the
- published data I've seen of about 11 kcal/lb is required for
- sedentary males to maintain body weight.
-
- I eat a lot more rice (Jasmine rice is my favorite) and stir fried
- vegetables than I used to. I drink a lot of well water. My diastolic
- BP has dropped from the mid 90s to the low to mid 80s.
-
- I tried to limit weight loss to a max of about 1% of my current
- body weight per week so that the change would not be too hard on
- my system. I only violated that a couple of weeks where I lost 3
- or 4 lbs. Most weeks I lost -1 to +2 lbs.
-
- The bad news for me is that my HDL trend is steadily down in this past
- year. Further if two data points of triglycerides constitutes a
- trend (which it doesn't) I'm on the rise there too. February 93
- data will be most interesting.
-
- I was thinking that if trigly has indeed stabilized at the top of
- the normal range, I might try a red wine experimental trial of
- three months to raise the HDL and hope it doesn't pump up the
- trygly. ANy suggestions ?
-
- Of course, I need to exercise more. I do a lot of walking in the
- very large plant that I work in.
