  26. I can sympathize with your friend.  My eyes are very similar to what
  27. you describe.  BUT, I've now been wearing contacts successfully for
  28. about 5 years.  Sure beats using the bottoms of coke bottles.
  29. Finding someone experienced with fitting us "poor eyesight" types
  30. was my biggest problem.

  32. I first tried an "optician" (basically through the local discount
  33. glasses & contact lens retailer).  Then I tried an "optometrist".
  34. Both were dismal flops: major problems with fit and visual clarity. I
  35. finally tried the contact lens specialist who is partnered with my
  36. opthalmologist.  Bingo.  From talking with him, I've learned that
  37. fitting contacts becomes more & more tricky with # of diopters of
  38. correction.  For the -8 or worse range, see someone who SPECIALIZES in
  39. fitting contacts to people with poor vision.  My contact lens
  40. specialist sees 20-50 people like me PER WEEK.

  42. Your friend should ask his opthalmologist for a referral.  If he
  43. hasn't seen an opthalmologist recently (not "optician", not
  44. "optometrist"), carry him there.  People with eyesight in our range
  45. need yearly checkups by an opthalmologist due to high potential for
  46. development of some major eye problems.
