- These are in order of preference. Anyway, I am in a particularly
- fortunate situation. I have a friend in the Ukraine who is a netadmin, and
- offers an e-mail translation service (German, Russian, English, and a few
- others. Software or manuals -- no difference to him. Mail me for
- information, and let your friends know about it!) It seems that the
- hard currency problem is a very real one for this poor guy. In addition,
- I've an uncle that maintains a fairly robust import/export business to
- the former USSR with regards to hardware for both computation and
- networking, and some software to go along with that. By working with
- these two contacts (and a few others I have less contact with) I may be
- able to forward hardware and software to and from these areas. I cannot
- say exactly what will be acceptable to either party, but if you do want
- to help people in the area with regards to computational access and
- facilities, mail me and I'll see what can be done.
-
- NOTE: I won't make one red USA cent from this thing. In fact,
- I'm trying to find the funds to advertise the translation service in
- a few journals. My interest? I graduate next December, and this will
- look *incredible* on a resume. That's it, save my normal willingness to
- help others when I can (I can't help it -- I was raised that way!).
- Given the phone calls and mail charges, I'll lose a couple hundred
- most likely. It's worth it in the interview next December when I
- graduate, so that's my angle on this whole thing.
-
- Anyway, I am sorry this isn't directly related to energy. Maybe
- this can be of help: At ISU, when I was a lowly NucE Undergrad (program
- was killed my Junior year, so I switched majors), we gathered data on
- the UTR-10 reactor using Apple IIe's with D->A converter cards and a
- few BASIC programs. I'd be willing to bet that old IBM XT that works
- as a doorstop might be useful over there for similar purposes, if not
- as terminals for some sort of Freenet or even a machine to get News and
- publish relevant articles for the townsfolk to ponder. It's up to you.
-
- Please feel free to copy this article, in whole or in part, to
- anybody/anywhere you see fit, so long as the context is not skewed in
- the process. I may or may not act as a go-between. It depends on
- what my contects wish to do and how easily they can connect to you.
- I shall endeavor to help both sides in any negotiations I am in,
- but prefer to merely act as a trading house for e-mail addresses. If
- my help is needed, it shall be given, but I trust responsible adults
- will be participating and won't need my intervention at all. I will
- not post e-mail addresses for the obvious harassment reasons.
