  10. While I was in Columbia SC, a few months ago, I was looking for a race or
  11. 2 to get into, but no one I could find knew where to go to find one,
  12. until I wandered into one sporting store, and asked the salesperson.

  14. They suggested that I call the "Running Hotline", which we found listed
  15. in the local phone book (white pages).

  17. It was an answering machine, recorded by the owner of a local running store
  18. who wanted to inform people where and when races were held within about
  19. a 2 hour drive of Columbia.

  21. I thought that that was a great idea, and am going to check into getting
  22. a listing here under the same name, as the store owner agreed that using
  23. his listing name of "Running Hotline" would be a great idea, so that
  24. runners who are visiting any town could look up that name to find the info
  25. line for local races.  (you know the whole standardization thing)

  27. Anyway, I just thought that I would let all of you know about it, and
  28. hopefully more will start, and perhaps we could even include a list of
  29. cities with the "Running Hotline" in the FAQ for rec.running.

  31. I am hoping that a running club, or store, or even the phone company will
  32. sponsor the hotline for the local area, as all it really needs is a
  33. voice mail box.

  35. If you think that you might want to do something like that in your local
  36. area, or are willing to check into a running store or club setting this
  37. up, then maybe you could post a message here, so that someone else in the
  38. same area doesn't do the same thing.

  40. It would also be a good way for running clubs to announce their meetings
  41. and who guest speakers will be.
