- Well, well, well, maybe natural selection is about to have its evil way
- once again. There are two different types of acetone peroxide. I will
- assume that you are producing acetone triperoxide. Having just returned
- from the library after having checked this very substance in Fedoroff
- and Sheffield, "Encyclopedia of Explosives and Related Items" (among others),
- I can say that acetone triperoxide is considered the MOST sensitive
- initiating explosive available (around 11cm for a 500gm wieght in the
- drop test if I remember correctly). This explosive is also extremely
- friction sensitive. Apart from its hypersensitivity it is also volatile
- at room temperature and so is not used in any commercial or military
- application. As for the hand trick, there was also mention that while
- small amounts merely burn if unconfined, larger amounts can DETONATE.
- (say goodbye hand!). Acetone triperoxide is classed as a Primary
- Explosive and as such should only be made or used in SMALL amounts.
- I have had much experience with another organic peroxide which is
- less sensitive and less volatile (HMTD). This is a very powerful
- PE and initiator (I inadvertently disintegrated a 4 gallon plastic bucket
- with a small cap containing no more than 1gm HMTD immersed in water).
- Due to the reported sensitivity to various metals and its high
- sensitivity to shock, friction and even pressure, I have given-up
- using it. While I have never experienced any problems with this
- chemical, there are numerous reports and stories of accidents with
- it, that make it too unpredictable to safely use. The same goes
- for acetone triperoxide and even more so. With explosives you can
- never be too careful. Just because it has never misbehaved as yet,
- doesn't mean that in some future application, it won't suddenly
- decide to be unpredictable and shatter a few illusions.
-
- BTW, apparently, acetone triperoxide is still sensitive when wet
-
- Mark.
