- I recall a while back that some people complained about aftermarket mags
- (ramline included) not being up to snuff. Well, I saw a ram-line mag
- for the SIG P226 with a capacity of 18 for $15 and thought that it would
- be a neat thing to have for my SIG P228 (it fits, just sticks out a
- little).
-
- When I took it out of the package, it had a definite film of grease (or
- something on it) which I proceeded to wipe off with some Hoppes. I
- loaded up a full mag and cycled the stuff through my SIG, no problem.
-
- I then noticed that the base plate was not securely attached. It should
- slide onto two rails on the magazine itself, but was only on one of them.
-
- I then got curious and popped the baseplate off. The entire inside was
- covered with a THICK layer of grease, with obvious excesses built up at
- the feeder (is this the right name? the part that moves up and down.).
- This may be a great way to insure smooth operation, but I don't want
- that crap on my ammo. I wiped down the insides with Hoppes.
-
- The spring by the way is pretty neat. It appears to be a coil spring
- attached to the feeder that unwinds as the feeder is depressed down.
-
- Attaching the baseplate was difficult. Difficult to do correctly that
- is, I could see why only one rail was attached.
-
- I took it to the range today and experienced flawless function.
-
- Overall, once I corrected the defects (inexcusable I admit) it seems to
- be a good piece of work. I especially like the finish which is some
- sort of smooth laquer -- should ease magazine insertion and ejection.
-
- By the way, would there be any problem with using a magazine that sticks
- out like this one, other than a slightly changed grip? It doesn't stick
- out much, seems OK.
