- #In this posting, I'm not providing a solution. Instead, I have a
- #similar but worse problem. I'm considering to drop her because of
- #her attitude toward my guns/security plans. Let me tell my story
- #and you guys can give me suggestions.
- #
- #I have been seeing this girl for a short while. She grew up in a Michigan
- #rural area and is an attorney ( not my favorite type though ). Recently,
- #I found out that she used to a DA ( the anti-gun type ) and still has
- #a *VERY* strong prejudice against handguns.
- #
- #She even hates my security alarm and comments that I'm paranoid to
- #have all these things installed. Her reasoning is that no one is going
- #to bother me, and my guns will only hurt myself. She claims that she has
- #shot .22 rifles before. ( So, taking her to a range will not help at all. )
- #She points out that I'm living in my own "jail" by having all these
- #motion sensors and by having the "fantasy" of arming/defending myself.
- #
- #So, do I have a solution to this problem? Guys?

-
- Today is my one year anniversary with my SO.
-
- I yawned mightily this morning, and found Rebecca handing me a cup of
- coffee. I smiled and thanked her. She said, "I have a present for you."
- We are both financially struggling students, and so we promised that we'd
- go out to dinner and not buy gifts for each other. As I opened my mouth to
- protest that I didn't have anything for her, she handed me a box. "Shut up
- and open it."
-
- When I opened the box, I found two things that are completely priceless: a
- Browning Hi-Power, NIB, and a Cook County Deputy Sheriff's badge, that
- oh-so-coveted sign of political favor that is the only legal way to carry
- or even own a pistol in Evanscum, IL.
-
- And then I woke up. (sigh)
-
- Back to reality. Rebecca is from an anti-gun household, and had never been
- exposed to a Real Live NRA Member before. When things started getting
- serious, I explained to her that as soon as I finish school and move out of
- the People's Republic of Illinois, that I'm going to get well trained by
- somebody who Knows His Stuff. And then I'm going to own and carry
- firearms. Not just a .22 for plinking, but a real live Assault Pistol<tm>.
- And probably lots of other stuff [All together now, "Buy 'em all!"]. I
- then explained to her that if she could not deal with my owning firearms,
- and her going to the range regularly so as to shoot them well, then she
- might as well give up on me at once. I told her I was going to be
- completely inflexible. I meant it. She agreed, and now is not so
- anti-gun. (My hope is that for a wedding present I will give her a NRA
- Life Membership, and that she'll be thrilled.) I suspect that when she is
- finally introduced to recreational shooting, she'll realise just how much
- she was propagandized in her youth.
-
- My advice: do what I did. Try to be rational. Explain that you will be
- completely inflexible. If she leaves, well, she leaves.
-
- YMMV.
-
- (Did I mention, that as poor a student I am, I gave $100 to the NRA/ILA
- this year?)
-
-
- Good luck.
