-
- That WAS a pretty sketchy report. The owners and some of the principal
- management of Garden City have been under indictment for a couple of years
- now for skimming profits. [This goes to show that some people just can't
- make enough money. It looks to me like that operation is financially
- equivalent to a legal money printing press]. Anyway, owner Nick Dalis,
- his mother, a couple of nephews (I think) and various other people have
- been in and out of court for a long time. Former SJ COP Joe McNamara wanted
- to shut 'em down and revoke the license, which would effectively mean
- they'd get *nothing* for their investment in the club. Once McNamara left,
- the climate was far better for a settlement of some sort. The new
- chief (I'm not going to mangle his name here, it's Lou C.....) is willing
- to let the Dalis family sell their interests, (and thus make a potload of
- money).
-
- A deal was worked out such that they plead guilty to some subset of the
- charges, and he doesn't revoke the license. They sell their interest
- and apparently only Nick Dalis runs any real risk of doing time.
-
- Of course, the fact that the club pays $5M/yr. in taxes didn't hurt the
- SJ City Council's willingness to find some middle ground %).
-
- Personal opinion: Garden City is a clean operation in the sense that the
- dealers are square, the games are square. That's the part that matters
- to me. Clearly some very slimy stuff was happening in the backroom, and
- I think it's wholly appropriate to get those responsible out and toss 'em
- in the pokey if the violations are serious enough.
-
- I do worry about the jobs of the people that work there. I suspect that
- lower level folks (dealers, cashiers, waitpersons, etc.) are probably
- fairly secure. However, floorpersons, shift managers, etc. may have a
- tougher situation. I feel bad about that because I think largely they
- are a fine bunch of people doing a difficult job very well. I can't think
- of any floorpersons I would advocate getting rid of. And the shift
- managers that I know (Japanese Mike, Rick Bell, and Chris Martin) all do
- an excellent job. I would suspect their jobs might be at risk.
-
- Now there *are* a couple of dealers I'd like to talk to the new management
- about...
