  21. My Dad told me that when he was a kid in St. Louis in the Twenties, he was
  22. standing in a gas station when a hot-rodded model T Ford came screaming in the
  23. driveway.  The driver jumped out just as the car came to a halt and started
  24. yelling something about stopping his engine, which was plainly visible because
  25. the covers weren't on (a hallmark of hot rods even then).  Dad said the whole
  26. block was glowing red -- it couldn't be stopped because it was dieseling.
