- OTC, Snap On, and others all produce "scan tools" for a similar purpose:
- to get data from the computer control system. In most cars, there are
- other functions available as well. You can request the computer system
- test its actuators, use backup or limp home fuel mode, blink the check
- engine light for various purposes, and so on.
-
- In the case of GM and Chrysler, data consists of trouble codes a serial
- sensor data stream, and the ability to issue commands from the scan tool
- to the computer. Ford _until very recently_ only issued computer trouble
- codes through this data interface. New Fords in most product lines, have
- a sensor data stream as well.
-
- In European and Asian imports, different years, and different
- manufacturers can have proprietary, documented, or no data link. For
- several years, proprietary data of some sort has been available, but was
- of little or no use to repair shops otther than the dealer Lately, more
- of the models are using documented data links and the scan tools, if
- properly equipped, offer information on that system. As with domestics,
- different levels of info are available.
