  21. Since you haven't expressed any preferences the following
  22. is pretty general.
  23. If you just want a Corvette you might look at the 78
  24. through 82 models.
  25. In each year the creature comforts became a little better
  26. but of course,
  27. the price went up.  The models from 1980 on had less
  28. weight and therefore
  29. got better gas mileage.  A broad price range for cars in
  30. the 78-82 model
  31. years is $6,000 - $12,000.  There are a few special cars
  32. in this group
  33. including the 78 Pace Car, 78 25th Anniversary edition and
  34. the 82 collectors
  35. edition that will be much more expensive than the price
  36. range mentioned
  37. above.  Naturally a low mileage well kept car will command
  38. a premium also.
  39. Earlier cars are a possibility but you may not be
  40. interested in maintaining
  41. a car that is over 15 years old.

  43. The current body style was introduced in the 84 model. 
  44. (There are no 83
  45. model year Corvettes)  The 84+ cars have computers which
  46. make them more
  47. expensive to fix than the earlier models.  Insurance costs
  48. are a factor
  49. too.

  51. The general answer to your general question:  Buy an 80 or
  52. 81 Corvette
  53. with the smaller HP engine (L-48), your choice of auto or
  54. 4-spd,  A/C
  55. is nice because Vette cockpits can get warm since you are
  56. sitting right
  57. behind the engine, next to the tranny, in front of the
  58. diff. and right
  59. over the exhaust system - all in a small cockpit.  There
  60. are no 
  61. convertables made between 1975 and 1986.  All models
  62. starting with 76
  63. through 1982 have T-tops.  84+ have a solid one-piece lift
  64. off roof.
