- According to the news release I received from Chevrolet (with
- accompanying photos) the Caprice-based Impala SS (of which 2
- were built) were primarily done for the SEMA show to "tweak the
- interest of the automotive aftermarket" according to Chev GM
- Jim Perkins. But based on the positive reaction, they're
- considering its potential in the marketplace.
-
- The Impala SS is actually a Caprice LTZ underneath. It's outfitted
- with the 300hp LT1 Corvette engine and a 4-speed auto trans. They
- also created a new grille, deck lid spoiler and monochromatic paint
- scheme, as well as some small inserts to change the appearance of
- the rear quarter windows. Wheels are 17" aluminum with P275 Goodyear
- GS-C tires and the car was lowered 2 inches. If a production model
- came to be, the car would have to be brought up in height due to the
- bumper laws. Inside, they went to the parts bin and dug out some
- bucket seat tracks available in the Caprice police package. They used
- 2 production driver's seats with leather and a console was dropped in.
- They replaced all the interior wood grain with satin black.
-
- Based on the black and white photos, the exterior treatment really
- cleans the car up.
