- I think oil companies will incorporate whatever they think there
- is a market for. Some companies like AMSOIL and REDLINE have been
- selling auto consumer oriented synthetic oils for years.
- Recently I've seen Vavoline and other major brand labels on
- synthetics in local car parts shops. The oil companies are just
- being "market driven."
-
- I think what's driving the interest in all these magic and
- non-magic additives that cars are getting more and more expensive.
- Old attitudes like "oh, just drive the car into the ground,
- because it won't last anyway" are being questioned.
-
- I used to race GT-3 and I used a Mecca 6" full-flow filter. If I
- remember correctly, this filter provided 3-6 micro filtration
- and could flow 45 gallons/minute of hot 30w engine oil. These
- filters are popular on Grand National cars and some big-block
- racers. When these filters are used with small engines, they
- last a long time. Mecca sells a two-pointer mechanical oil
- pressure gauge that is intended to show the oil pressure before
- and after their oil filter. When the pointers show a difference
- of more than a couple of psi, it's time to change the filter.
- These filters can be disassembled, and the internal filter elements
- can be inspected and replaced when need. There is also an optional
- magnetic trap - it really works.
-
- My point is, consumer interest has created an market for synthetic
- oils. I wonder if "better" oil filters will follow? An alternate
- question is whether "jiffy-lube"-type businesses will REDUCE the
- market demand for retail oil and oil filters.
