- I bought an STR-AV310 a few years ago and after I had it for a couple
- weeks it developed a similar problem to the one you mentioned. A
- quiet hum. One afternoon I was listening to some pretty *loud* music
- and turned the CD player off when I left (but forgot to turn off the
- receiver). At any rate, when I returned the buzz was pretty loud --
- (not deafening, mind you, but there obviously was a serious problem).
-
- I called a friend of mine who was head electronic repairman at the
- SONY dealer where I bought the item, and he gave me the following
- instructions:
-
- It seems the robot at SONY doesn't tighten screws enough and this
- was (is?) a *very* common problem with this equipment. If you take
- the cover off the receiver, the right half (looking at the front) of
- the inside is more or less a green circuit board. In the top and
- bottom left corners of this circuit board component are two screws
- that keep the component in place -- they each have an arrow pointing
- at them drawn on the green surface. Simply tightening these screws
- (and tighening them *well*) should make the buzz dissappear.
-
- I did this once when I first bought the component (about three years
- ago) and I had to do it again only recently.
-
- Keep in mind that mine is an STR-AV310 receiver (I have no idea if the
- same thing applies to all SONY receivers), that doing this type of
- work yourself probably invalidates your warrenty (if you want to get
- *technical* ;-) and that I am in no way associated with SONY or any
- dealership, and I cannot be held responsible for any explosions or
- electricutions that occur because of the above advice. :-)
-
- In all seriousness though -- it was a very simple procedure and it
- saved me at least a couple headaches.

- PS. I'm an electrician -- so *please* pull out the plug before you
- start doing any of this stuff!!
