- For under $1000, you can either go new or used; you'll generally get
- a much better deal going used, as there are still a lot of folks
- out there replacing their LP collections with CD. I'd caution against
- buying a used cartridge as you never know just how old it is.
-
- I see your from Ottawa!! Hey, I just spent 3 months looking for used
- a used turntable around here! I eventually picked up a Sota Saphire with a
- Syrinx PU2 Gold, but it ran $1250, a little more expensive than you
- were looking for. Actually, it'll be impossible to find a used Saphire or
- used VPI Mk III (+ good arm) for under $1000 (I tried!). But there are other
- very good options:
-
- Euphonics on Bank street carries used turntables still, and they give
- discounts to BNR employess (the owner works at Carling!). If you see
- a used Rega planar III in good shape, you should get a really
- good deal. This is a decent table, especially with the RB300 arm.
- Actually, I'd put that arm on almost any table. For the
- price, it's really hard to beat! The best price in the city on
- a new one is at Distinctive Audio (around $350). Riel (the owner)
- also had a used VPI junior, also a real good table, for a very
- reasonable price; Check it out!
-
- A friend of mine bought a new Revolver turntable with an RB300:
- the sound was excellent considering the low cost of the deck.
-
- On to inexpensive cartridges:
-
- Between myself and my brother, we must have purchased at least
- 8 or 9 different moving magnet cartridges in the last 5 years.
-
- We both found the absolute best buy, hands down, was, beleive it or
- not, the Stanton 881(MkIIS, I think). This is very smooth
- and neutral and a great tracker (greta dynamic control). It'll treat your
- albums well due to its line contact stylus. The best price I found was
- $100 US via mail order through Lyle cartridges in New York. Their
- service is excellent and delivery speedy. And I thought Stanton only made
- crappo DJ gear! Oh, one word of warning: don't use the integral-brush!!!
- It only adds noise and kills detail. I also found that adding a very
- small amount of stick-tack in the stylus assembly cavity (well away from
- any moving parts!!) helps make it even smoother. It must damp out
- vibrations in the stylus housing.
-
- Others we tried were: Grado ZTE+1 (cheapo for $30 bucks, sounds OK
- for 1 month then goes to shit); Grado 8MR (much better, but somewhat dark
- and lacking in detail), Sumiko Blue point (good cartridge but bettered
- by the Stanton IMHO), AKG something or other (<$100 but sound = yeeeccch),
- others not worth mentioning.
-
- Happy hunting!
