- You'd rather be kill-file fodder than listen to a friendly
- suggestion?
-
- I'll try one more time... with a bit of commentary so you may
- figure out why it is in *your* interest to be a bit more circumspect
- in your choice of newsgroups.
-
- The net is very skeptical forum, and its currency is *personal
- reputation*. The most valuable thing each of us has is our
- reputation. We can increase our reputations by contributing to the
- net... by asking interesting questions, offering useful answers,
- sharing good humor, etc. Through their postings, I have come to value
- the advice and opinions of quite a few people in the Cleveland area,
- even when I don't always agree (and on the net, there will always be
- a few people who will disagree - that's only natural). On the other
- hand, there are a few people who insist on ignoring the conventions of
- the net that lead to polite and informative discourse. Such people
- ultimately acquire such a negative reputation that few if any netters
- will ever take them seriously again. John Palmer should suffice as an
- example of this latter breed. When he first appeared, several
- netters, including myself, attempted to offer some advice on how he
- might make amends for his initial blunders. His response to me was,
- "who appointed you net cop"? He just couldn't take advice. Too bad.
- To say he lost his reputation is putting it very mildly. :-)
-
- When you challenge someone else's reputation you are putting
- your own on the line. Be careful. We only know you through what you
- post and where you post it. IMHO, What you have posted in this thread
- to date does not reflect well on you. It might be wise to reconsider
- your approach.
-
- Sincerely,
- Dick Depew
