- I have 4 children (ages 9, 7, 4, and 4). I understand your need to have
- more time for the child but still have a career. It is possible to
- work part time. I have some suggestions. I also have an article on
- Telecommuting (Dec 1992 Home Office Computing). It gives some hints about
- getting your company to let you work part time. If you can't get ahold
- of it, e-mail me your home address (I won't tell, promise!!) and I will
- mail a copy to you.
-
- Some companies have parttime programs. They allow you to work anywhere from
- 10 - 36 hours a week at a percentage of your base rate - ie, you still get
- your same hourly rate. You should ask your human resource person.
-
- It has been my experience that a company gets more work out of a part time
- professional than they would from a full time employee in the same number
- of hours. You have to be more organized and since you are only at work
- a certain number of hours, you are more motivated to get the job done.
- Also, there is a certain sense of having to 'prove' yourself. You have to
- show them that parttime works.
-
- There are some drawbacks. I didn't get sick or vacation time when I worked
- part time (I made up the hours I missed), and sitters are slightly more
- expensive by the hour when your child goes part time.
-
- I don't think that working parttime will be a serious, long term disavantage
- for your career. You will advance more slowly than your counterparts, but
- you have a more important career now!!
-
- If you can't work parttime, you might want to consider working a flex schedule.
- I would love to work 4 9 hour days (10 hours including lunch) and 4 hours at
- home. That would give me three days at home. It would help alot.
-
- I *try* to keep my hours low while working full time. It doesn't always work,
- but if I am really efficient and organized, I can do an excellent job in
- a normal 40 hour week, so that I am home with the kids as much as possible.
- Overtime often means eating at my desk, rather than staying an additional hour.
-
- If you do decide to keep working fulltime, GET A HOUSEKEEPER!!!! Free up
- some of your time at home. Ours comes in once a week for a couple of hours
- (it's through a housekeeping service), and it is wonderful!!! Now if only
- I could get someone to do the laundry :-)
-
- Good luck. It's about time that corporations realized that dedicated,
- valuable employees are also dedicated parents.
